Re: Avatar
Alright, I just saw it, and it was pretty good.
WHO CARES IF IT RESEMBLES SOME MOVIE NO ONE CARES ABOUT (Fern Gully).
Have you ever heard of an infinite number of monkeys with typewriters? Well, as I see it, the movie was good, so, I really don't have a problem with it resembling anything else, nor do I care. There were several clearly Cameron aspects of the movie, that were just, too apparent, but then again, does that make the movie bad or something? So what if there was an Hispanic female marine, and so what if there is a big bad company, these things are cliched even within Cameron's scope, and yet, who really gives a hoop? I mean, if you have a problem with that, then go write a letter to your congressmen, because the reality of it is, if people think it is good, they will see it and there will be more of them, and sure enough: http://avatar2.movie-trailer.com/ so there!
NO, it wasn't just CGI the whole way through, I even saw it in 3d, and still, its not like... Bayfest or anything, there was actually a lot more to the movie then just CGI, YES, it was revolutionary CGI wise, and in addition, it was a good movie overall.
You walk into an action adventure movie, and then become disappointed because, it was an action adventure movie, with good action, and good special effects...
There were only a few discrepancies I feel need to be addressed, the horses sounded like velociraptors, and the Na'vi were too Native Americany for my taste, but these detract very little from the movie watching experience.
Being an unoriginal director that makes good movies is a heck a' a lot better then being an original one that makes terrible movies.

Re: Avatar
I like Raiders of the Lost Ark. I just think that The Last Crusade is 100000000x better.
Temple of Doom, on the other hand, is trash.
No!
Last Crusade was the least appealing of the original trilogy, it destroyed Indy's lone wolf personality, and had little going for it in terms of special effects. Seriously, Sean Connery does not "make or break" movies... Although a good actor, his role in LC was... JEWNEEOR!
The 'family ties' part of the movie just REWEENS it, ruins it just how it ruined Kingdom of the Crystal Skull! What was wrong with Temple of Doom? At least the unfamiliarity between the characters was tangible. Lost Ark and TOD are waaay better then LC in every way, effects, acting, story, etc...

Dud and I are the ONLY people who didn't like Avatar? Well color me unique!
In case you weren't aware, a large group of people liking something does not make it good. There's a thing called mass Hysteria.
I'm not saying it's good because people like it, I'm saying people like it because it's good.

Eh, thanks, Mrs. Kinslet.
I just had a vision of Rasq sitting at a table looking at forks, while behind him a Ben Kenobi-esque Kate Winslet ghost says, "Use the forks Rasq."

My point is that a lot of people liking it should not lead you to think that it is likely to be good. If you're not suggesting that, I simply disagree with your statement.

Re: Avatar
Is this debate over? Can we accept that the movie has elements from previous movies? Can we accept that Avatar borrows certain elements and makes a movie that is better than any of said movies?
Well thats nice, I saw the movie again btw, still good the second time. I don't know how you could think the movie was boring, at all.

Re: Avatar
Question: Is this something you would want to see a sequel of, provided that James Cameron or somebody of similar savvy takes the helm, and the same actors would return?
Second question: Who wants to see a short fanfic based off of this?

Re: Avatar
And another thing:
According to James Cameron, there were a few scenes removed from the movie (Including a tribal hunt) which will be released on the Blu-Ray edition.
Since he claimed that these scenes had been bogging down the middle of the movie, this is probably where a lot of the character development between Jake and Neytiri.

I kind of want to see a sequal (even though the movie ended in such a way that it would be good by itself).
I heard that most of the original cast signed on for two sequel movies, and supposedly the films will expand to a new planet and possibly an entire universe.

It was probably one of the most immersive films i've seen. It was just under three hours long, and the only reason i knew how long it was was because my bladder was on the verge of exploding and i had to leave halfway through for a moment.

Don't cha hate that? You do everything you can to make sure you don't have to go in the middle of the movie and it happens anyway.

You know you can get a bucket of popcorn with extra extra butter?
You might want to call the ambulance ahead of time.

Yeah, I felt that way too, it was very immersive for how long it was. I felt this way even though I was getting kind of sick during the movie.
At our AMC theater, we have self servicing condiment stations, so we can literally fill up the bucket to the brim with butter.

Huh. Sounds nice.
I've heard about people complaining that the 3D made them sick, but I was able to drive my brother and myself home safely.

I'll probably get thrown off by the 3D, as usual.
