Re: Halo Legends 'The Package' review.
The art in this one was really pretty. But the story and X-Wings... not so much.
I thought Linda had red hair and Kelly was blonde? Ah, w/e. I don't count this as part of Halo anyway...

Re: Halo Legends 'The Package' review.
Vigil wrote:
- Spoiler:
We open to a cloaked ship, and a briefing by a UNSC captain to five Spartans. He tells them the Covenant has acquired a high priority ‘package’ and their mission is to enter enemy space and retrieve it. They have a window of ten minutes to complete their mission, the package has a location signal, but it is pretty weak so they’d have to get very close to read it. They pan around to look at the Spartans; all show their faces except one, who has ‘117’ on his chest plate.
- Spoiler:
- I think the first thing that jumped out at me was their appearance. We know from multiple sources that Spartans are very pale and that they all keep their hair close cropped per military protocol.
Vigil wrote:
- Spoiler:
Master Chief is leading this operation and ask what will happen if they fail to do it in time. The captain responds that they will have no choice but to fire on the ships and destroy the Covenant fleet and them along with them.
- Spoiler:
- Though one must wonder: how is a single Prowler going to destroy an entire[i] Covenant fleet? Based on the number of ships we see, I'd say it would take a good part of the entire UNSC Navy to destroy such a fleet.
Vigil wrote:
- Spoiler:
And then………we see the EBA booster frames. These are the notorious ‘X-wing Motorcycles we saw in the previous previews. And yes they are as retarded as we thought they are. They are armed with what appears to be chain guns, and a rear warthog style gun on the rear, which comes out of the back of the ship and is fired by a rear gunner if their frame is destroyed. They also appear to have archer missiles and Gaus cannons. They also have energy shields on them.
- Spoiler:
- Aside from being completely ridiculous, I think the biggest thing that upset me was the energy shields. Based on the number of Spartans that die in the first part, we know that this can't be taking place within a decade of 2552, meaning Spartans don't have shields, and UNSC vehicles most certainly don't. I'm also wondering, since the Prowler decloaked, wouldn't the entire Covenant fleet have burned it to cinders by now?
Vigil wrote:
- Spoiler:
They then deploy and fly directly at a Covenant fleet, which quickly readies its weapons. I’ll give them credit they do a damn good job at showing us plasma torpedoes and the lasers of the Covenant ship, and it looks pretty similar to what I imagined them to look like. The Spartans then dodge the plasma rounds using some sort of flare, and fire missiles on the ship, as well as deploying a scanning device.
- Spoiler:
- It is interesting to note that the Covenant ready their weapons, but don't bother to deploy shields. Since this first ship is actually a decoy, I can understand why its shields aren't deployed, but we'll come back to this.
Vigil wrote:
- Spoiler:
They quickly get a reading on one of the ships, and two of them go in towards the ship, saying there isn’t time to wait for the others. The shields of the ship are down around the hangar and they quickly dart into the ship through them. Solomon, followed by female Spartan enters the ship. Solomon exits his frame to search the ship, while the female Spartan remains on hers to provide fire support.
- Spoiler:
- Based on the missile fire, I'd say the shields aren't just down around the hangar bay, but across the whole ship. I'd also like to know why the female Spartan, soon revealed to be Kelly, is wearing what appears to be EVA armor. I thought Bungie was very clear that the extra armor in Halo 3 was purely multiplayer and had no place at all in canon?
Vigil wrote:
- Spoiler:
Chief realise something is wrong that the first scan gives a positive reading, and moves to investigate. Solomon makes it to the signals location and discovers a Covenant bomb. Chief quickly arrives and yells, ‘Kelly it’s a TRAP!’ (Ackbar would be proud.) The bomb explodes killing Solomon and Kelly and Chief barely make it out of there.
- Spoiler:
- And so 343 Studios kills [i]another Spartan. If they keep this up, there won't be any Spartans left to fight on Reach!
Vigil wrote:
- Spoiler:
We cut to the Covenant flagship where the fleet master is chuckling at the Spartans taking the bait. Beside him a red armoured elite is less enthralled. Warning the Fleet master not to show weakness as they will exploit it. The Fleet master mocks the Elite reminding him of when he fought these creatures in battle while his battalion died, and he will not die with honour.
- Spoiler:
- No real issues here, other than the hideous way the Elites' mandibles move when they speak.
Vigil wrote:
- Spoiler:
The Spartans regroup and discover every ship in the fleet has a signal. Chief quickly deducts that they are decoys and the real package is on the flagship. They then fight their way to the ship, fighting seraph squadrons and weaving in between the superstructure of one of the ships. They continue to dodge seraphs, which hit Kelly’s EBA frame. Another of the Spartans hangs back to hold them back and gets crushed by the moving ships. Apparently named Arthur, they quickly continue on, dodging more seraphs and finishing them off. Kelly ejects from her frame and lands on the other remaining Spartan’s frame, taking control of the rear turret, while he charges the Gaus cannon to pierce the hull. When it is charged they fire everything they have at the same point, blowing a hole in the ship.
- Spoiler:
- Another Spartan down. According to my calculations, there were no longer any Spartans defending the Super MAC generators on Reach. Further, it seems that the maker got confused here. The flagship would most certainly have shields deployed, as it was not a decoy. Why do the Covenant not have shields, while the UNSC does?
Vigil wrote:
- Spoiler:
They land in the hangar and are confronted by a legion of Covenant troops, after using a bubble shield to protect themselves. Chief then says they have three minutes to do this, and they have to sprint the whole way and not to all behind. And then the ‘To be continued….’ sign appears.
- Spoiler:
- If the Bubble Shield really is UNSC technology, why is it that the Covenant seem like the only people that have them during Halo 3?
Vigil wrote:To conclude, this again has some okay ideas, but again, you put in stupid crap like the EBA frames, and you keep of killing off Spartans like it’s going out of style. It’s a miracle if any of them made it to Reach. Tune in two weeks time for the conclusion of this story, as I think we can only go downhill from here.
You're definitely right. This whole series is going down hill.
Re: Halo Legends 'The Package' review.
Theory about sheilds: Perhaps they were too close? The sheilds are not skin tight, they are over the ship. Thats one explanation, a rather stupid one I know.

Re: Halo Legends 'The Package' review.
To maybe make a theory at the destruction of the entire fleet, I'm taking a guess they have a NOVA or two to blow the shit out of everything.
But, wouldn't the destruction of an entire fleet be worth more than a "package" anyway?

Anyhow, Frankie confirmed that the Covenant shields were up and the ONI ship wasn't a prowler.

I think Bungie was thinking along the lines of ODST, Recon, and the Hayubashi.
I thought that was pretty good.Rotaretilbo wrote:
