I was going to post this earlier, but to be honest I'm not overly excited about this one.
Good thing I'm giving up on the series after Reach

Re: Halo:Evolutions
Nooo.....I'm giving up after I finish Halo: Reach.
It does have Eric Nylund writing one, but it also has Tobias Buckell, who wrote the awful Cole Protocol and the writer of the Gears of War books as well.
It looks like quite a mixed bag to me. I'll probably read the Nylund story and scroll through the others.

I haven't read Cole Protocol yet but I heard it has a lot of Elite backstory, mainly the Arbitor, which I like and want.
I'm currently about half-way through Contact Harvest.

Re: Halo:Evolutions
It has a lot of Thel's background and a bit more insight into the Elites Culture and customs, which was pretty interesting.
They fucked up the Spartans big time (they hide in plain sight, without their armour. Yeah like nobody's going to notice a seven foot muscled colossus.), not to mention I'm getting a little sick of 'Captain Keyes is a badass' in every single book. It was good in Fall of Reach as he was mainly in the background, and mostly space battles.
In this it was bordering on the absurd.
Contact Harvest was okay, not great but okay.

Re: Halo:Evolutions
Well Master Chief and the other Spartans have been the main focus in the other halo books, so having one with a little more Elite story and culture, sounds about right to me.
When I read through the other books I was generaly interested in what was going on, but when a chapter came up that was Covenant point of view, I got really interested. So a book with more of this and a little of less UNSC/Human/Spartan focus is fine with me.

Re: Halo:Evolutions
It's quite like the other books, flipping between the two.
The Rebel POV is interesting and fine, got not problem with that story arc, but it does get damn stupid at the end.

Re: Halo:Evolutions
It was pretty poor, but it had some nice ideas in there. Nylunds Books are still the best in the series. (Seriously they really are clinging on his success. It always says 'Continuing the Times best selling book series' at the top, which I think Ghost of Onyx won.)
I wonder what happened to that Foreunner Trilogy they were yacking on about a while back?

Re: Halo:Evolutions
I do prefer Nylund as well. But I'm also enjoying Harvest. Whoever wrote that.
I'm guessing that Forerunner Trilogy is still gonna happen. It will probably get a cover reveal either end of this year or Q1 next year.

Re: Halo:Evolutions
Which was the worst part of the book. Whereas the factual information about the Elites was OK, their characters were completely messed up. I ended up skimming through those sections of the book.Vigil wrote:It has a lot of Thel's background and a bit more insight into the Elites Culture and customs, which was pretty interesting.
On the second read-through, though, things got better. I was actually able to tell the difference between Mexican #1 and Mexican #2.
Yeah. That's one of the things that made me throw the book across the room.Vigil wrote:They fucked up the Spartans big time (they hide in plain sight, without their armour. Yeah like nobody's going to notice a seven foot muscled colossus.)
As for Halo: Evolutions, I shall buy it, and I think I shall enjoy it.
The Forerunner Trilogy by Greg Bear... I KNOW I shall enjoy that.

I liked Harvest. Never got around to reading Protocol though. Even though this one has Karen Traviss and Nylund, I still am not going to get it.

Re: Halo:Evolutions
Wait, Nylund is writing another Halo book? About fucking time! We fans can only handle so much bullshit between Nylund books! I mean, just look at the non Nylund books:
The Flood: I enjoyed getting an insight on what went on while John was busy with his shit, and I liked getting some insight into how the UNSC Marine Corps functioned, but Dietz's style was...bland. Everything was just too typical. Didn't help that Dietz had no creative room, and had to follow Halo: Combat Evolved's storyline, and to some degree explain the strange transitions between levels.
Contact Harvest: I enjoyed getting all that insight into Covenant culture, but trying to cover Ensemble Studio's ass by putting Brutes in early battles pissed me off. Statem certainly knew his stuff about the Covenant, but he did a terrible job emulating Nylund's style of writing concerning battles, and that sex scene at the end was just completely unnecessary fanservice.
Cole Protocol: It was cool getting to find out who the Arbiter was, but some of the Elite culture seemed...weird...like more fitting for the Brutes than the Elites. Also, it seemed like the author spent a lot of time and effort developing characrters, just to kill them in a most unsatisfying manner after initial character development has begun. Some of the insight into the rebels was interesting, but I think the whole Jackal-rebel alliance was just completely stupid and unrealistic. And while I was happy to learn a bit about Gray Team, I want to know why they were AWOL in 2552, not what babysitting job they were doing in 2530.

Re: Halo:Evolutions
Wouldn't it be cool if glorified writers(Ex: Tom Clancy, Stephen King) actually knew a lot about the Halo-verse and were asked to contribute?

Re: Halo:Evolutions
Character development in the Cole Protocol? I have no clue what you're talking about. The characters were made of corrugated cardboard!
The Jackal-Human alliance could have worked, but this is where Tobias PROVED that he needed a proctologist to go looking for his head. Instead of starting at the beginning and showing us what happened, what caused the humans to trust the Jackals, the book started out WITH A F$##ING FIGHT SCENE BETWEEN THE JACKALS AND A HUMAN! There's no way we could have sympathized with the rebels.
And given the multitude of chapters that could have been cut from The Bear and the Dragon, I believe it's time we give Tom Clancy a rest.

If it's not too much trouble, I would like to request spoiler tags when talking about Cole Protocol's story.
Because I did not know that there was a Human-Jackal alliance and now that surprise is out the window.
Please and thank you.

True. But it still doesn't change the fact that I'm slow in the race and have not read it yet.
I asked nicely, so please if anyone does talk about the story in Cole more it would be most appreciated if you spoiler tagged it from now on.

I think there was some development done on that Pelican pilot, but then they were like "oops, he died halfway through the book." Very upsetting.Rasq'uire'laskar wrote:The Jackal-Human alliance could have worked, but this is where Tobias PROVED that he needed a proctologist to go looking for his head. I guess the goal was for us to inherently mistrust the Jackals, but that just ruined the surprise of them being used to find UNSC colonies. I figured out Truth's plan as soon as they mentioned trading Plasma Rifles with the rebels. A book isn't as fun when it's predicable.

To be fair, the Jackal-Rebel alliance is introduced in like the Prologue, so it wasn't really that much of a twist. I've otherwise been avoiding spoilers, thus far.
