Unless of course you like the game, in which case you'll need steam to register and launch it.
As I said before, it is estimated that around 50% of PC game sales come from digital distribution, and Steam is the biggest of the online retailers. It has over 15 million active users, and is the most convenient of any platform.
Steam... is kinda a big deal

Sorry, but I'm gonna have to disagree seeing as I'm on 21% for this demo after downloading all day. Not to mention your GTA (or was it DeadSpace?) fiasco. I love my xbox because I can play stuff straight away. Even with installing stuff on PC I get impatient, plus it's far more likely to break. Now with steam it takes me three days to re-download a game, and my Half-Life 2 was still broken! Grr...
If my internet was at the standard it claims to be then I'd agree in a second, but at 8kb/s average, it tends to get a little annoying. On the other hand, I lost my Halo 3 disc! :O And have no way to get it back (unless I... find it). So +1 Steam.
In the end I can't possibly say. You know how hard it is for me to actually go out and buy games; but I've just said how hard it is for me to download now In the end... they are both deeply... deeply flawed ;D

Re: EMPIRE TOTAL WAR DEMO
I prefer buying the game and running it, windows is much more convenient as a platform itself.
ANYWAYS, me and p are gonna be doing zombies on this game when it comes out.

Re: EMPIRE TOTAL WAR DEMO
Wow... I tried playing the game... it took half-an-hour to load and worked about 1/20th the speed it should work at, even on low resolution. I think my computer's too old
Honestly, I don't think the game looks all that great though.

Maybe you should try playing a game that's not on Steam, get a look at some real quality
Re: EMPIRE TOTAL WAR DEMO
I don't like steam, I never use it. However, you insulted possibly one of the greatest games of all time, and for that you will die.
Empire Total War is not a steam game, the demo is.

Well, I was saying that it's the most convenient of any PC platform. AKA better than windows Live, which I suppose doesn't say a whole lot. The whole GTA IV fiasco was the fault of Take 2 and... YOU GUESSED IT! windows live.
Had GTA IV used steam as an online hosting service, I'm sure my troubles would have been far less numerous.
Civ wrote:The game still isn't very good IMO
You haven't even played the game. You've played a couple battles with shitty units. The real-time battles are not even the main part of the game. The majority of the game is spent on the campaign map, which is turn based and all about management and diplomacy.
Have you ever played a total war game?
Dud wrote:Empire Total War is not a steam game, the demo is.
Digital copies of ETW are exclusive to Steam, and retail copies must be registered and launched through Steam. I'd say it's a Steam game.

Re: EMPIRE TOTAL WAR DEMO
It is not launched through steam...the multiplayer is just hosted by steam...
Judging by this, you haven't really even played the demo that came with two historical battles...CivBase wrote:Wow... I tried playing the game... it took half-an-hour to load and worked about 1/20th the speed it should work at, even on low resolution. I think my computer's too old

Re: EMPIRE TOTAL WAR DEMO
Won't work for me.
Game is too big,(or my comp's RAM is too small, depending on how you look at it) and it won't run.
I get to the loading screen for a level, and it just doesn't work.

Re: EMPIRE TOTAL WAR DEMO
The Hessians were dissapointing. Theyre shouldve been better than the rest of the british troops. Yet I found my Hessians getting ass-raped by militants.
Re: EMPIRE TOTAL WAR DEMO
I didn't say it sucks, I just don't like the style of gameplay.
You're right, I've played about five seconds of the laggiest gameplay imaginable in basic training and managed to rout a single squad with 5 cannons. I haven't played it enough for any major reviews... but from what I've seen it doesn't look like something I'd enjoy immensely.
Of course, that's just me. I wouldn't mind playing the game any more than I would mind sitting down and playing Marathon, Wesnoth, or Sim City 4. But it's just not something that I would do as much as possible.

Re: EMPIRE TOTAL WAR DEMO
Um, and you're saying that after routing a squad of soldiers in a land battle in 5 fps?
You have really lost much of the respect I had for you if you judge something so big with something so little...
You hardly even know what the fuck it is...

Re: EMPIRE TOTAL WAR DEMO
mhmm....
From what I've seen, it's not the type of RTS I'm interested in. Just say'n. I don't think the game is a failure, and I think it looks very nice... just not my style.
And what do you mean lost a lot of respect? Most of you labeled Halo Wars as fail before the demo even came out! Don't you be telling me how to judge games!

Re: EMPIRE TOTAL WAR DEMO
First of all, we had a very in depth look at how the game worked, we already knew how it played and what it was like. Try describing TW for me, and I'll take it back.

You saw some videos from E3 '08 and most of you left before the UNSC page was even made.Dud Doodoo wrote:First of all, we had a very in depth look at how the game worked, we already knew how it played and what it was like. Try describing TW for me, and I'll take it back.
Total War is a turn-based (something I'm not big on with RTS games), squad-based game (once again, not big on it) with a more interactive view on the battlefield rather than a birds-eye view (something else I'm not fond of) set in a 1700's time period. It is mostly about the conquest for new colonies (I'm guessing mostly the Americas), and revolves around expanding your 'empire'.
Not my favorite type of game. But hey, most of you hate Battlezone II and I think it's epic. What difference is this game? Just because I don't love it doesn't mean I'm a poor judge of games.
Care to explain why? I happen to enjoy the gameplay very much.Dud Doodoo wrote:And we shouldn't we be able to tell you how to judge games? It is a failure...
