Things you look for in a good RTS
I'm more of the old-school type.
Games that appeal to me are the orriginal 12 CNC games (not TW), AOE 2, and the Battlezone games.
I prefur a streight-forward grid system for building placement and unit movement.
I don't like overly-complicated economies, but they must be presant.
I like a wide build range that uses a rock-paper-sissors system.
I like games that allow for uniqe goals and well-thought campaigns that provide a decent storyline.
I also like when games have map makers (especialy the ones that require you to be a pro to use).
Free build with a decent sized set of structures & defences.

Good variety in factions. Not all the factions being somewhat the same. Good combat. SQUADS!!! Good building strutures. Pretty decent economy system. and GOOD ai.
Re: Things you look for in a good RTS
triple-back-flipping space marines.
In truth, the most important thing to me is economy. I want A LOT of it.

I have axis and allies. The board game part was awsome... but the RTS component wasn't great.

Re: Things you look for in a good RTS
I like it to have good difficulty settings that aren't like "to low" and the next highest is "wow just got pwned"
and not run out of resources 1/3 of the way through the game *looks at AoE2 and Red Alert 1*

RA games have always had a problem with reasources... but the fan maps quickly fixed that. Never had a problem with AoE2 though...NHW wrote:I like it to have good difficulty settings that aren't like "to low" and the next highest is "wow just got pwned"

Re: Things you look for in a good RTS
My favorite RTSs are "Rome:total war", "Stronghold: Crusader", and "AoE 3,"
all of which have pretty strong economy systems (especially crusader)

Re: Things you look for in a good RTS
You should try the Empire Earth expansion. There's nukes yes, but there's also a unit who's sole purpose is anti-nuke.

Re: Things you look for in a good RTS
No way... You all disappoint me so much, especially since no one has mentioned the best RTS in history as of yet.
STARCRAFT
Best RTS ever, released over ten years ago and still receives thousands of players a day playing from everywhere on the planet. It includes everyone anyone has said makes a good RTS in this thread. Every single one. Even Nukes. It is balanced so precisely that no race is dominant and no specific unit or combination of units is dominant. It relies 100% on individual skill and reaction time.
In fact, it has three television channels devoted to Starcraft related news and match results in South Korea. 24/7 too. They also have several entire Leagues for Starcraft (MSL, OSL, WCG). If you care anything about RTS gameplay, you had better check this game out. It has entire editing programs created from scratch from fans that allow you to do absolutely anything, including changing unit attack rates, hit points, movement speed, line-of-site, armor, weapon range, ect., ect., ect., as well as, in a few of the editing programs(there are over two-dozen, all but one of which were created by fans) you can even make custom and specialized terrain down to the pixels, including changing whether it can be walked on or not and if the line-of-site continues over it or if it blocks view.
Over ten years old and this is still one of the most-played RTSs on the market.
If you care to catch a bit of the gameplay, i suggest you go to www.sc2gg.com and watch some of the vids of Korean Pro-Starcraft players.
