You know what'd be cool?
A Gears of War RTS.
Now, I'm not talking about something like HaloWars(thanks a lot ES) but something both unique, and completely canon.
Within the GoW universe, there already exists a state of balance.
The Locusts have a massive horde of semi-soft bodied minions.
The CoG have an army of well trained soldiers as well as cutting edge technology.

Re: You know what'd be cool?
They tried to make a popular FPS game into a RTS already, and its failing
If it does fail they will not try and take a risk again as thats how game companies do their buisness

Re: You know what'd be cool?
Well, pheonix, seeing as how GoW is a TPS, it could be different. Though I'm not sure how you'd get the units for the COG.

The point of this thread is to ignore the complications with gaming companies, and focus on what the actual game should be like, not what it would be like.
We've all seen what happened to Failo Wars.

Re: You know what'd be cool?
GOW has even less units then Halo.........
Unless, of course, it was mostly infantry based. But then the COG would be horribly outnumbered.

Re: You know what'd be cool?
You really only need one or two types of infantry and a few vehicles to make a good faction in an RTS.
Rather than focusing on a pure rock paper scissors style, a good system to provide a commander the ability to effectively use tactics is all that would be needed.
I.E.
A COG faction would do fine if it just had the following units:
Infantry: Armed with a Lancer and a few grenades, A squad of COG troops is far superior to Locust standard infantry in all regards.
Heavy Weapons Team: Equipable with Either a Mortar or a Chaingun(Gattling gun, whatever you want to call it) These teams can provide both artillery support and form an effective frontline defense.
Sniper Team: A spotter and a shooter. Very effective against infantry. Can use Hammer of Dawn when researched and when available.
Erm... the APC thingy from the first thing: Able to transport a squad of troops and defend them with a Machine Gun, this IFV can withstand small arms fire and quickly ferry troops to the frontlines safetly. Soldiers inside can fire out of the vehicle while riding, adding firepower.
Centaur: This Light-Tank is both fast and powerfull. Sporting a cannon capable of eliminating most Locust with ease, as well as a machine gun, what it lacks in armor(which is low for a tank) it makes up for with its ability to quickly take down most enemies in a single volley(5 shots, before it needs to be reloaded).
Erm... Actuall tank thingy: The only tracked vehicle in the COG's arsenal, this tank dates back to the years near the end of the Pendulum Wars. Although slower than the Centaur, this Heavily armored warhorse makes up for it by having armor feet thick and its variety of weaponry.
It's massive main gun, while slow to reload, can fell anything short of a Brumak in a single shot. To assist taking out Infantry Targets, it's two Machine guns, which operate seperately, can mow down rows of enemy infantry. To add some anti-air capability, it also sports a four-rocket rocket pod, which can target both ground and air targets and while slow to reload, packs a large punch.
Its main design flaws are ones that were not factors before the war with the Locust; primarily the chance that a chasm could open up beneath you at any moment.(These tanks were abandoned later in the war as they were too easily sunk into the ground)
King Raven Support Craft: Capable of quickly transporting a squad of troops or another vehicle(not the heavy tank though) and then defending them with two machine guns. Although sturfy and powerfull, the pilots of these aircraft are constantly reminded what all that armor is for, and why they shouldn't rely on protection from it.
King Raven Gunship: Armed with Four 'wing' mounted Maching Guns and two rocket pods, these Gunships are a deciding factor in most engagements where the enemy either lacks or lost Anti Air capabilities.

Re: You know what'd be cool?
Actually I disagree with ALOT of the stuff in it. making a game that would emphasize tactics is not about cramming lots of special units with abilites in, but about simplifying the unit types and abilities to actually cause the player to position and attack with their units in a way that actually makes sense.
That thing was just jam-packed with units, special abilities and powers.
C&C 3 clones are bad.

Re: You know what'd be cool?
Here's what I was thinking:
Coalition of Organized Governments
CoG Infantry:
Normal Gears:
Made in squads of five.
Medium Armor.
Four have Lancer assault rifles, and one has a shotgun.
They also carry bolo grenades.
Special: Close up E-holes.
Effective against Drones, Wretches, and Tickers even when heavily outnumbered.
Sniper Team:
Teams of two.
A sniper and a spotter. Sniper has a sniper rifle. Spotter has a lancer and binoculars.
Medium Armor.
Special: Can be told to elimate Locust officers by their own means.
Will sneak behind enemy lines, find an officer, and hunt him down.
Effiective against all infantry, light and heavy.
Hammer of Dawn Team:
Teams of three.
Medium Armor.
Two Gears carry Lancer assault rifles. One carries Hammer of Dawn.
Must get within range to use Hammer.
Special: Hammer of Dawn.
Effective against Brumaks, Berserkers, and Seeders.
CoG Vehicles:
Junker:
Lightly armored.
Can carry Gears.
Armed with machine guns.
Effective against light and heavy infantry.
Centaur:
Moderately armored.
Armed with machine gun and medium cannon.
Effective against heavy infantry, Reavers, and (at close range)Corpsers.
Nameless Heavy Tank:
Heavily armored.
Armed with two machine guns and heavy cannon.
Effective against Brumaks, and Seeders.
Rig:
Moderately Armored.
Armed with Gatling Gun.
Can carry Gears(three squads). Gears can fire at enemies.
Effective for moving Gears to the battlespace.
CoG Air:
King Raven:
Moderate Armor
Can carry Gears(one squad). Gears have limited ability to fire at enemies.
Armed with missles and Gatling Guns.
Effective against all infantry, and Brumaks.
Locust Horde
Locust Light Infantry:
Drones:
Squads of ten.
No armor.
All have Hammerburst rifles.
Effective against nothing.
Special: Can dig Emergence Holes.
Wretches:
Packs of twenty. These packs are very loose, and unorganized.
Very light armor.
No weapons. Use claws and teeth.
Effective in large numbers at close ranges when fighting Gears.
Special: none.
Tickers:
Packs of five.
No armor.
No weapons. Explode when shot or get close to target.
Effective against Rigs and Centaurs.
Special: Have a concussion when exploding near a group of Gears. Gears are knocked on their backs.
Locust Heavy Infantry:
Boomers:
Teams of two.
Heavy armor.
Boomshot guns.
Effective against Gears.
Special: none
Flame Boomers:
One unit.
Heavy armor.
Scorcher Flamethrower.
Effective against Gears a close range.
Special: none.
Grinders:
Teams of two.
Heavy armor.
Mulcher machine guns.
Effective against Gears.
Special: none.
Butchers:
Teams of two.
Heavy armor.
Meat cleavers.
Effective against Gears at close range.
Special: none.
Maulers:
Teams of two.
Heavy armor.
Flail and Boomshield.
Effective against Gears at close range.
Special: none.
Berserker:
One unit.
Heavy, natural armor.
No weapons.
Effective against Gears, Centaurs, and Junkers at close range.
Special: none.
Locust Beasts:
Corpsers:
Heavy outer armor, soft underbelly.
Armed with spear-like legs.
Effetcive against all infantry, Rigs, and Junkers.
Seeders:
Moderately armored.
Armed with cannons that fire Nemacysts.
Effective against Centaurs and King Ravens at long range.
Brumaks:
Heavily armored.
Armed with large main cannon, and several machine guns.
Effective against Infantry, Rigs, and Junkers.
Locust Air:
Reavers:
Light armor.
Armed with light cannon and machine gun as well as spear-tipped tentacles.
Effective against Gears, King Ravens, and Junkers.
