Pie is superior because cheesecake is more pie than cake.

Cake has much greater variety

While pie is traditionally all fruit based (aside from the occasional pudding pie, which is just disgusting,) cake has an incredible number of variations. There's chocolate cake, vanilla cake, ice cream cake, angel bread cake, lemon cake, carrot cake, etc, etc, etc....

That's hardly fair. Pie is traditionally fruit based in the way that cake is traditionally either chocolate or vanilla. If we want to go and name the outliers, I guarantee you that pie will win, because you can put pretty much anything into a pie.

Which is an interesting definition, considering pumpkin pie is not encased in a crust, but rather is set in a bottom crust without a top crust.
