Doom has Gun wielding zombies

At any rate, no matter the zombie, the preffered method to kill them would be with a firearm; you are keeping a good distance between you and the target that way.

btw, for grenades, make napalm grenades. Its pretty simple. Mash up a styrofoam cup with some Gasoline, put into a glass jar with a rag and chuck it(basically Molotov with a near-napalm substance).

If you firemomb a zombie, they may run at you and burn your fortress to the ground, leaving you trapped. Fire is a tool to be careful with.

And I agree that a firearm is usually the best defence, but the difference is in the defence. If you were against non-gun zombies, you could go to the roof and whatnot. If they had guns you'd probably want to avoid even being in a line of fire.

why not?

a zombie is a person who is out of their normal thinking state of mind... generally they are infectious.... that doesn't mean they can't use tools...

if a person became infected while holding a gun... or knife... or w/e then I believe that they would use it... guns arn't hard to use... they wouldn't be like expert shots... but you would still have zombie old man jenkins walking at you firing his shotgun...

don't say "zombies can't figure stuff out like that"... because if that was the case then you could climb up on something 20 feet in the air and be safe

my new favorite anti zombie close combat weapon is an ice pick

so my new plan is to get some ice picks... sharpen them... stop by a firestation and get a firemans protective clothing... hold up in dorm for a couple weeks (6th floor.... stair doors locked from inside unless you use room key to open... got food across the street and in the building)

fire station is across the street

after a while I will go to police station to try and find guns (a few weeks)... then I will go into mountains and survive there until zombie infection is over... meet up with a larger group... or get infected

Normally speaking, zombies have no higher brain functions, at all, period. This includes the use of tools and weapons. A zombie is just as likely to blow itself apart with a shotgun as it is to point it at a survivor and fire it.

what is a normal zombie?

the closest thing to a zombie are the mindless voodoo zombies... who use tools just fine... as far as we know zombies will end up unlocking even higher brain functions than we have now....

I classify zombies as mindless violent humans... who's mindlessness is infectious... you can still be mindless and think... because if the zombies have NO higher brain functions... then they would not be able to tell human from zombie, tree from human, moving person from lamp post... and if zombies are really that dumb then there won't be any "swarming" they will simply kill each other and themselves... attack power cords... eat poisionous substances...

IMO zombies will have near human intelligance... or they won't be a threat what so ever

No, you don't need higher brain functions to function or survive. They will be able to do whatever the host has formed solid habits of, as then the action will be coded into their lower level motor levels of the brain. These are the levels that coordinate walking, face recognition, path finding and very hard coded habits. The synaptic strengths of the connections on this level dictate the way information is processed, and these levels can also control when to do these things, without the need of higher level brain functions. Therefore, it would be logical that if the host was a redneck hunter, using guns would be coded into his brain. If he was infected and managed to keep hold of the gun, the brain does not require the associative layer to realize the gun is a weapon, and it certainly won't need it to aim and fire.

While the pathways for a redneck hunter to use guns is clearly lower than a regular person, I doubt it is so low as to be excluded from "higher brain functions." KrAzY, give a monkey a gun. Does it know how to work it? The monkey can recognize other species, friend from foe, food from not food, living from dead, etc, but it can't aim and shoot a gun. That's because the monkey doesn't have our higher brain functions. Same goes for all animals. They survive just fine without our higher brain functions. Zombies would be like really stupid animals. They can walk, claw, bite, maybe grasp, maybe even climb and jump, but certainly not aim and fire a gun.

a monkey can learn to use a gun... not well... but they can still do it... monkeys can actually figure out how to do a lot of things.... and you seem to forget the fact that ZOMBIES ARE HUMANS... meaning that EVERYTHING in their brains would still be there... unless they had a complete brain wipe due to the virus... which would cause them to basically become unfunctional.

look at Alzheimers disease... when their memory finally drops out they forget EVERYTHING... my great grandmother forgot how to eat... forgot who my grandpa was... she had to be force fed every day... didn't know how to walk... ext...

oh yea... and walking on two legs... do you realize how much thought that takes? there is a reason mentally retarded people are often in wheelchairs... it takes years of practice to teach our brains how to walk around.... if the zombies brain was wiped completely of everything the person knew previously... then you would be running away from stupid, immoble, child like things....

the only way for zombies to be dangerous would be a hyper rabies disease or something like that... in which the zombies would still have their cognitave functions....

if zombies are wiped clean of all memory then they would lose everything... they would be reverted back to an infantile mind... let me remind you that infants can not even realize the fact that a person that they can not see is in the room with them.... they can't use their limbs well... they can not communicate... they can not walk... they will eat anything that they can put in their mouths...

also, zombies are humans... if a zombie is at even the equal intelligance of a monkey it wouldn't be able to tell zombies apart from humans... period

Post by Rotaretilbo Tue Feb 24, 2009 11:04 pm

Again, zombies are almost always associated with loss of higher brain functions. That is quite different from total brain wipe. It means that most sections of the brain have shut down, and only the core functions work. And, by the way, you ever notice that zombies walk funny? And if you gave a monkey a gun for long enough, it would probably eventually be able to use it in the simplest and most rudimentary way. So, if zombies took the time to experiment with guns for hours on end, they could probably figure out how to use them. Unfortunately, they are often too busy eating people's brainz, and the concepts of curiosity are lost on them. And monkeys can probably be considered as having the most basic of higher brain functions, so they are probably more intelligent than zombies. And, again, even ants can tell the different between members of the same species from other hills. Zombies tend to move, smell, look, and sound differently from humans, after all.

No, to figure out how to work a gun requires the cognitive higher-function that only humans posses. However, generally if you are so used to doing something that you don't need to think about it to do it, and sometimes find yourself doing it or wanting to do it without even thinking about it. When this happens, it means that this habit has been engraved into the motor levels of the brain, and thus a zombie would be able to use it. All shooting a gun requires is face recognition, motor coordination, and the habit. Of course, the zombie would need to keep the guns in his hands, but if the host was used to having it with him then it most likely won't be a problem.

Monkeys would have no trouble firing a weapon because the task is so simple. They may not be able to figure it out on their own, and if you simply give them a gun without them having any knowledge of it beforehand they will be clueless, much like a person. Sure, a person could probably figure it out, but the point is that you don't need to if it is already engraved into your motor functions.

Zombies don't learn, they just use whatever the hosts already knew. Otherwise, the brain would heal itself and revert to being a more normal, although slightly less intelligent, human being.

The point you made was that monkeys can do things like walk, jump, ect. These things are mostly instinctive, and already built into the motor system. If you train a monkey to fire a gun, and it does it often, it will have no problems firing that gun because it will be in his subconscious motor layer.
