That's because you've never played a good RPG dud.

I think that RPGs are the genre to take the most advantage of the medium, by giving you choices, and a world to explore. They really separate games from any other form.

Mount and blade may be good, but it lacks most qualities that make modern RPGs great. I love RPGs because they give me a very interesting world with tons of backstory, and tend to have really good, epic stories and often times (especially in the case of Mass Effect) some top notch dialog. I also love RPGs for their environments. While I don't love Oblivion, Its outdoor scenery is absolutely beautiful. Fallout 3 certainly isn't what I would consider "beautiful," but it too has some very interesting spaces. Mass Effect, in my opinion, exceeds again in this field.

The view of the Earth from the perspective of Moon is just gorgeous.

Mount and Blade doesn't really qualify in any of those categories. I'm not saying it's a bad game... it's just not the same kind of game at all.

WoW, Diablo, Runescape, the new warhammer thing, Phantasy Star Universe(something like that) Oblivion, Fable II, Mount and Blade, and fallout 3 briefly.

I hated what I played, end of story. Maybe there are good RPGs out there besides Mount and Blade but my experience tells me STAY THE FUCK AWAY.

Sorry toaster, but I just don't like RPGs.

Four of those are MMOs, one of which being a J RPG. You listed 3 actual western RPGs.

Fable 2 is good, but it's understandable how someone could very easily dislike it. Either way, it has the game design of a Japanese RPG and is very linear.

I don't like Oblivion very much myself, but it is a great game.

Fallout 3 is a game that you have to sink a few hours into before it even begins to grab you. Once you're into it, it becomes one of the greatest time wasters you can possibly imagine.

I myself got near the end, and the Left 4 Dead came out. I had been having a great time with Fallout 3, and it had been becoming one of my favorite games. Unfortunately, Left 4 Dead took me out of the experience, and I'll likely never finish that playthrough.

I intend to get it on PC when the price goes down on Steam, or I may just get my friend to burn me a copy, seeing as I bought the collectors Edition on 360 already.

Oblivion and Fallout (which I just got yesterday) are fun IMO. Whatever you have fun with is worth it. When you think about it, what's the point of an FPS?

Typical FPS Weapons:
Handgun
Shotgun
Short-range, rapid fire machine gun
Long-range, slower fire machine gun
Heavy, deployable machine gun that makes you slow and has to be out to be carried
Rifle
Semi-automatic rifle
Sniper rifle
Anti-armor (usually a rocket launcher)

Typical FPS Vehicles:
Small, light vehicle with little/no guns that holds only 1 or 2 people
Medium sized vehicle with a decent set of guns (usually with a fast rate-of-fire) that holds from 1-3
Large vehicle (usually a tank) with a slow but powerful gun

Typical FPS Characters:
Tough sarge who doesn't take noth'n from nobody
New recruit that's usually unprepared
The nerd that can't fight for crap
The cocky, tough-as-bricks explosives expert
And you: either the new guy, veteran, super soldier, or prisoner

Typical FPS Missions:
Destroy a bunch of aliens in a given area
Kill some enemy leader, destroy a building, or capture some plot of land that is apparently really important
Just survive the war (quite often WW2) or zombie invasion
Find some random POW that you know nothing about

Erm... I was thinking more on the lines of Cortana, but Sparky works fine.
There wasn't one in Halo, but like LP said, one thing doesn't change much.

The nerd that can't fight for crap - yes, the lady doctor that's kinda evil
The cocky, tough-as-bricks explosives expert - no
And you: either the new guy, veteran, super soldier, or prisoner - ur a veteran scientist

Typical FPS Missions:
Destroy a bunch of aliens in a given area - not as an objective, but you do it sometimes anyway
Kill some enemy leader, destroy a building, or capture some plot of land that is apparently really important - you do deactivate a cannon and kill the evil dude...
Just survive the war (quite often WW2) or zombie invasion - all the time
Find some random POW that you know nothing about - yes

Its gameplay and design are very basic, but its story is so great that it is perfect the way it is.

A) Have Three Dimensional graphics.
B) Have a plot that isn't entirely text reading.
and C) To use this system of characters.

And also, the tough explosive expert would be the Aussie guy.
He's not an explosive expert, but he eats nails for breakfast.
