Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic
And here i thought EA was too stubborn to do that so soon, I'm really surprised, From what i understand though you still need to buy the game.
It appears the system they plan to put in place is similar to GW2 except run through a EA filter to make sure it will be horribly broken.

I'll probably reinstall just so I can run through all the character stories.
That is a lot of stories to play through and I do love me some Bioware RPG's.

TOR already has had one round of DLC (It had some Rakgoul plague or something) and they also added the Legacy system.
With how much TOR cost EA to make, and how quickly they had to go free-to-play (Let's remember that the game isn't even a year old yet.) then I highly doubt they'll have much money and/or drive to make any real big DLC for it. Probably minor updates and cosmetic stuff at best.

Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic
What a shame... I was kind of excited for ToR when it was in development.
Why do companies have such a hard time making MMOs? They need to understand that if you don't make a truly unique and enjoyable experience, you're only going to bankrupt yourself (especially when your income is subscription-based).
However..... Planetside 2 is turning out quite nicely. Anyone else get in the beta?

I am. It's pretty fun, but you need people to play it with imo.

Yah, it's hard to get anything done by yourself. Luckily, I've got two other friends in the beta who I play with ^^Elabajaba wrote:CivBase wrote:

The problem is, MMO's take such a ling time to make they started work on them a good 4-6 years ago. Back then the model was simple and margins were good. All they had to do was copy WoW, add a gimmick and they could find a decent population and survive.
It's only in the last couple of years the rise of Free-to-play has really become a solid and accepted model as they finally got the balance right between making money for paid content, while making it fair for those who don't pay a penny.
League of Legends is killing the old MMO model and they've quickly had to learn to adapt and change which is why their suffering now, as they weren't designed from the ground up for Free to play.
The Elder Scrolls Online is walking straight into the same problem, and the sad thing is they don't even realise it, as it almost identical to TOR in terms of model and design. They even use the same game engine for Christ's sake.

Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic
the Elder Scrolls online failed out the gate from not trying to be Elder Scrolls with lots of players and instead trying to be WoW looking like Elder Scrolls.
Successful MMOs need to be niche, not casual.

Agreed. The main thing future MMO's need to do is stop copying WoW. It's a tired formula, and you'll never recreate the success that game had, not even WoW itself can with it's expansions. The only way you'll bring people back is by doing something unique and exciting.

Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic
well they already sunk so much time effort and cash into building them that put their heads in the sand and refuse to go back in and change things. instead they just hope they can make enough in the first year to cover the cost of making the damn thing.
Hell Skyrim reminded most of the industry something doesn't have to be a mainstream gritty wargame to be a widely successful AAA title, then Elder Scrolls Online is announced as a blatant wow clone, smooth. Hell even wow is dieing at this point since even with Cata and MoP the magic for that style of play is just, gone.

Yah, but it's buggy as hell atm. I could definitely go for Just Cause 3, though. No need to change much; just improve the combat and add more vehicles/explosions.KristallNacht wrote:Holy shit that is awesome!!!

I'm hoping That's what they're doing on that game now. I think the JC2 mod is still in Beta, which is why it's buggy.
JC3 would be fun with at least a few people who could hop in and blow stuff up with you. Their most recent game, Renegade ops showed they got the whole 4 people blowing stuff up together format.
