Re: THQ is no more
Gearbox is still has enough money to buy IPs after making Duke Nukem: Forever and Aliens: Colonial Marines? That is interesting news.

Article talking about how Gearbox took people off of Aliens game to work on Borderlands and still took money from their employers and lying to them saying they were working on Aliens.
"At some point in 2008, SEGA temporarily pulled the plug on the game," he said. "They caught wind of Gearbox shifting resources (despite still collecting milestone checks as if the team were full size) and lying to SEGA AND 2K about the number of people working on each project. This led to the round of layoffs at Gearbox in late 2008."
Fuck Gearbox, that is not how I expect a professional company to act.

Huh, that's actually pretty professional where I come from. Only, instead of 2K and Sega, it's OSHA and the FDA.Lord Pheonix wrote:

Yeah I'd take that article with a heavy pinch of salt. I'm not saying that isn't possible to be factual, but there's only the word of a single unknown former employee to go on.
Besides, Gearbox has plenty of other more public fuck-ups with Colonial Marines being the best example. Duke Nukem probably was doomed before they got hold of it, but Pitchford weird defense of the game that even lasts to this day was always a bit dubious.
Oh and this

Re: THQ is no more
My friend briefly interned at General Dynamic a few summers ago, as his father is a pretty high ranking Director in the company. At the Pheonix location, General Dynamic had some kind of cooperative thing going on with one of their chief competitors, Lockheed Martin. My friend's job as an intern was to set up a second intranet in secret where they could hide all the good shit from Lockheed Martin.

Re: THQ is no more
I agree with Lax? I never played the first SR, but I really liked the balance in SR2, though the boss was (realistically for a crime boss) a bastard. SR the Third was still fun but it got goofy (and the main character wasn't a bastard). The promo material for SR4 is making GTA V look like a good option...

Saints Row 1 was a GTA clone, especially in story as it tried to ape it wholesale. 2 was a little more free and crazy but still was a bit lacking in terms of the dull grind of some of the side missions and the lack of good variety.
Saints Row the Third is easily the best game in the series as it stops attempting to be the next GTA and went off into pure insane over the top fun. It wasn't supposed to be taken seriously. Especially in it's story.
Yeah some of the jokes didn't hit, but when they did they struck hard. That opening sequence on the plane? Sold. When you parachute out of a helicopter and take over the saints building while Kanye West "Power" plays=awesome. The Deckers.die Mission? Fucking genius and hilarious all at the same time. The final sequence when "I need a hero" plays as your driving to save Shaundi was again superb musical timing for a joke.
They even made fun of their other franchise they owned Red Faction with that little spoof of a old fashioned Sci-Fi flick at the end.
Saints Row 4 is going in the exact right direction, as there is no way they'd ever be able to match Rockstar in terms of a serious narrative of GTA V. It's better to go absolutely crazy and you know be an actually fun game to PLAY.
GTA back before it got super serious with GTA IV always had a little levity and fun with the radio shows and signs, as well as some of the characters. You notice the most fun had in GTA is when you when on a killing spree with unlimited ammo and blowing stuff up when the cops came after you. Saints Row is merely taking that philosphopy to it's ultimate conclusion, and that is a game I'd rather play than another 40 hours super serious crime drama about trying to get out of crime but being pulled back in by something from the past.

Re: THQ is no more
Yah.... GTA V interested me for a bit, but then Saints Row IV was announced and Just Cause 3 was basically confirmed. Imo, GTA looses to both those franchises any day.
Re: THQ is no more
Saints Row 2 is where it's at.
People that hate on it's aesthetic are just indoctrinated by rockstar.

GTA has it's place as a serious piece of crime story telling, with some of the best writing in the business. The problem is that GTA IV was no fun to play because of it's merciless car physics and lack of checkpointing in lengthy missions.
I know they've been getting better since then, but the way your character kinda walks and runs like a tank was always a little grating to me, especially when in Saints Row and Just Cause the character controls always felt fluid and responsive, not to mention those games are all about blowing shit up in awesome ways and having fun diversions, which what GTA used to be sadly.
And while we're speaking of Just Cause 3, please add multiplayer co-op. That mod has proven that people want to do crazy shit together, and it would be a lot of fun if they implemented it in the next game.
