THQ is no more

And now we have an idea of where their studios are going.
Any thoughts on the news?

Re: THQ is no more
I don't see how they went under if they made Darksiders, Metro 2033, Company of Heroes, Dead Island, and Saints Row.
Plus everything Relic did.

Dead Island is owned by Deep silver, who just bought Volition (Creators of Saints Row and Red Faction) and the Saints Row franchise.
The main reason they went under was due to several major missteps in terms of devices and games they were banking on making them money.
Homefront was a game that they poured millions in marketing and producing, and it sold pretty poorly due to reviews coming out pointing out how bad it was.
They then produced the UDraw, which was a touchpad tablet that came with a stylus that connected to your 360,wii, PS3 and you could draw on it and it had a few games on it. Good in theory, but nobody bought it and they had put most of their cahance in it which really put them in a bad financial place.
Their last throw of the dice was Darksiders II as they hoped that would hold them over until Metro: Last light and Company of Heroes came out. Once again it didn't sell anywhere near enough to do that and they ran out of money just after Christmas.
Sad really.

Re: THQ is no more
That is unfortunate...
Honestly any kind of paraphenilia for the 360 outside of controllers and headsets is a bad investment. People just want to play a game and use a normal controller for it.
The Rock Band/Guitar Hero series got lucky and made it big with what they have but that's because of the gimmick not the product itself.

It was trying to pick up on the success of the DS with similar systems, hell it was very close to what the WiiU
controller is.
The gimmick was drawing, which was already pretty weak gimmick for a new device. The fact the device wasn't well used didn't help at all.

Saddening, but I could see this coming unfortunately. Theyve been having money troubles for awhile now.

Ringleader told me about this. Still don't know if it's a good idea or what, but I doubt it'll raise enough funds anyway.

Re: THQ is no more
Wow. They have a banner at the the local high school's sports area. Guess that'll have to come down.
So I guess Last Light is on hold? That's unfortunate, as I was really looking forward to it. Though someone will probably pick it up soon.

Metro: Last Light is on sale for preorder on Origin right now so I guess it's mostly done now.

Metro's developers were self funding it, so all they really need is a publisher. There was some talk of them doing that themselves, but during the auction it appears Deep Silver got the rights for Metro, so I don't know how that shakes up.

Deep Silver is a developer itself, though, right? Or are they a publisher? I've never really heard the name before.Vigil wrote:Nocbl2 wrote:Wow. They have a banner at the the local high school's sports area. Guess that'll have to come down.

Deep Silver is a publisher.
They're probably most well known for being the publisher of Techland's Call of Juarez and Dead Island.

They were attempting to sue THQ to stop the sale prior to the auction.
It's still unclear if they'll continue this to try and get the publishing rights back now Ubisoft has them, or they'll arrange a new deal with them.
Either way, it will definitely come out at some point. Game is pretty near completion and has a lot of positive previews around it, along with it being a well known and popular property.
I still expect to see it released this year.

Metro was mainly self funded by the developer from what I've been led to believe.
Even if it hadn't had been picked up by Deep Silver, it probably would of come out self-published by them.
I'd be more worried about if Darksiders 3 or the mysterious 'Crawler' project Vigil was working on will still happen, as currently the crytek studio made up of the core of those guys doesn't have the rights to the franchise. Hopefully Crytek will buy that soon enough.
Oh and Crytek also has the rights to Homefront, which they'd supposedly been making a sequel to. So that will be one to watch.

The sad thing is the reason Atari is doing it is so the more successful Americian Branch can break off and rebuild the brand.
So they'll possibly still be a gaming company named Atari after this. The only difference this time is it won't have the rights to all the classic names it was known for.
