Diplomacy is a board game with pre-WWI Europeans attempting to dominate the continent. It is somewhat similar to risk in that controlling some territories provides more armies and armies will fight on a turn-basis, but it has far more emphasis on talking to other players and doing diplomacy and scheming.
There are 7 players:
United Kingdom
Germany
France
Italy
Austria-Hungary
Russia
OttomanEmpire/Turkey
BBJynne
Gauz
Rotaretilbo
Seath
Tim
Tyler
Felix
The game is turn-based in that it has phases during which stuff happens, although all actions are simultaneous, and are done according to orders sent in before the phase action begins. Between phases there is time set aside to do diplomacy with other players.

Here's a blank version of the board I'm using with the pieces on it, in case a piece is overlapping a label or border and you want to check without that piece being there.

I sign up obviously. (host can play in diplomacy without conflicts of interest, since host doesn't really have any power)

Re: Diplomacy Game Thread
It's generally laid back, and inherently built with time limits. If a player is inactive, too bad for him, his shit holds. The only real part that requires lots of activity is the player-player diplomacy.

Re: Diplomacy Game Thread
And an additional advantage is that as long as a player tells us that they are quitting, a replacement isn't TOO bad, altho it's still not as good as the player staying.
Also, the actual rules say that countries are supposed to be chosen randomly, but if ALL of you want to do picking, we will do so.

I think we should assign randomly to avoid conflict.
I'm okay with getting any nation really.

Re: Diplomacy Game Thread
Would everyone be ok if I took Germany and you guys did random? Germany has no inherent advantage, but it's the principle of the matter.
Re: Diplomacy Game Thread
This sounds fun, but I wouldn't really know what to do. If you guys don't mind

I still don't see why we couldn't choose our own starting nations. Everybody wanted different ones anyway.

Re: Diplomacy Game Thread
This situation isn't ideal because I was like "if some of you want to we can do picking" and that was not a good idea on my part.
I fucked up by offering a choice that I should not have.
I apologize, I should have just made us assign randomly from the start, rather than thinking that a hybrid or something would be awesome.
Reasoning though:
1. no first-come-first-serve
2. the rules say so
3. This holds to my word earlier where I said that if anyone wanted to do random at all, we would.
How the actual game will work:
People do diplomacy however they see fit through whatever means they like. Hell, you can even post in this thread if you want.
Whenever a player feels ready, they can send me a PM with their move orders. Initially, this looks like it gives me an advantage, but it doesn't.
This is because:
1. I won't open the msg until it's time to update the game.
2. This can be verified by seeing that it's in your outbox instead of sendbox.
3. Msgs in your outbox can be edited, so even if you change your mind about your orders, you can still change them.
4. I will email my orders to anyone who wants them a few seconds before opening the PMs. Because of timestamping, this will verify that I didn't cheat, and still me to update everything extremely quickly.
At least read the short wiki-page version of rules, but other than that, feel free to ask me questions about Diplomacy game rules or anything else.
Since this is the first turn and we don't really have a feel for people's activity level yet, I'll say that we have 2 weeks until the next turn (when I will post ppl's orders publicly and update the map) because prob no one really knows wtf to do OR if people agree to end it early (which I hope will happen, since two weeks is kinda a long while)
During this time, do diplomacy and scheme.
Map and nations are in the first post.

Re: Diplomacy Game Thread
There was on error on the game board where an Italian unit was in Tuscany when it was supposed to be in Rome. This has been fixed and the map updated.

One more week to send in orders.
If everyone is ready to send in orders, say so and we can do it earlier.
