Let's Play Touhou!
東方 Touhou Project
Yesterday we patched our version of 12.3 so that now, not only does it work properly, but it is in English.
As such, I'm going to play through Touhou 12.3, Unthinkable Natural Law's story mode with one of the characters and add some commentary or w/e it is people are supposed to do for Let's Plays.
That character will, of course, be the strongest character, and the only one worth playing. I'm referring to Cirno, obviously.
She's powerful, intimidating, merciless, and entirely without equal in terms of strength, intelligence, and will. Does she have what it takes to combat the horrifying monsters of Gensokyo? We shall find out together.
(More Cirno art, yayyy)

Re: Let's Play Touhou!
This contains a lot of imgs, so it's under tags so ppl won't have to load all the imgs every time.
- Spoiler:
Touhou is a game about genocide, from the perpetrator's point of view. This unconventional way of showing the terrible act is what gives Touhou its appeal. Normally, the player is a Shrine Maiden who goes out and does mass murder on the youkai (spirit) population of Gensokyo, and beats up people who she feels are threatening. In 12.3, player can choose to be various types of youkai or humans. It's also worth noting that most Touhou games are bullet curtain games, unlike 12.3.
With that out of the way, let's play Touhou: Unthinkable Natural Law!
"Ehhh, Easy modo?!" Yes, We're playing on easy. I am not very good at Touhou. Could later go back through on harder so you can see spellcards that cover the entire screen with projectiles if I feel like it.
Also, Cirno is a badass.
Cirno, displaying her usual aptitude for thinking and logic, creates a plan for Daidarabocchi. Also, excited Cirno!
SHRINE MAIDEN! Excited Cirno should watch her back.
This is the best part of the game. Cirno's surprised face is hilarious, and it gets better because she holds it...
Through the other girl's...
Entire dialoge.
Cirno isn't the best at bluffing.
DENY EVERYTHING!
"Screw you, I have green hair! Let's fight!"
This is a perfect example of the majority of the characters' tendency to fight each other on the vaguest pretense or suspicion. I think Sanae (greenhaired girl) may be somewhat retarded though; it's hard to see Cirno as the mastermind of anything.
FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT
Ice Fairy summons ice!
I don't even know what's going on here, but Cirno's pose is priceless.
Sometimes you have to dispense with all the elemental magic and just kick people.
She just dove at her opponent and smashed her legs with a block of ice.
THROW THAT BOULDER!
For being an apparent double hand amputee, Cirno did very well.
Victory feels good. (and we have hands!)
THUS OUR EPIC QUEST BEGINS!
[After this panel, Cirno flies off screen, but I don't screencap any of the short talking animations, as they happen pretty fast and I don't know when they'll happen in advance.]
Damn straight. Don't mess with Cirno. She's the strongest.
Sanae (green-haired enemy) lies and acts on the pretense of being a pure and wholesome shrine maiden, but she really just wants to exterminate all the fairies. This is evidenced by her unjustified attack on Cirno.
As the first encounter, obviously I assumed that Sanae wouldn't be very difficult to defeat, and she probably shouldn't have been, but I'm pretty bad, and Cirno came to within a few hits of perishing. Only her inner strength saved her from being a statistic in the fairy genocide.
[The in-battle pictures with Sanae's spirit meters and the weather text on them were not from this playthrough. They're from a vs. match that I played later because I didn't take a whole lot of pictures while I was actually fighting.]

I think you could create a slide-show animated GIF out of those images and it would have the same effect as a video. Maybe.
Re: Let's Play Touhou!
Part 2: Red Chinese Communism (has never looked this cute)
- Spoiler:
Last we saw, Cirno was in pursuit of a large figure, and had just flown off screen.
And now she's nowhere to be found. Introducing our new character, Meiling! She's a Chinese Communist Martial Artist Gate Guard Working for a Vampire. And that's pretty normal for these games.
It's worth noting that whatever it is we're following, everyone sees it differently, or at least makes a different assumption as to what it is. Cirno believes she's seen Dardarabocchi, Sanae thinks it's a giant robot, and this new character (Meiling) thinks it's the Taisui Xingjun. We may not be sure what we're dealing with here.
Oh look, Cirno's back. I guess we get to play the Ice Fairy after all. Poor Meiling though, she's right about one thing: Cirno is a catastrophe waiting to happen! ;)
Well it looks like we won't have to fight this communist soldier. We shall make our way past this place, forging onwards toward our quarry, continuing our dogged pursuit until we have it cornered, with nowhere to run and then we will FREEZE ITS EYES.
Or, we could talk more...
This is the obvious time to leave, as it's clear Cirno isn't wanted. However...
"What do you mean we aren't going to fight? I'll start a fight! RECKLESSNESS IS COURAGE!"
It's time to duel! Over... curiosity?
Cirno's most visually interesting attack, and also most powerful (so far).
"Why we gotta fight? Eye just want a hug!"
"I LIED!"
Taste the rainbow. Feel its burn. Die fabulous.
Spell Card vs. Spell Card explosion of ice and rainbows crystals.
*
Speaking of which, spell cards are a kinda weird thing to put in a fighting game, imo. A lot of them can do crazy damage and such, but are really hard to hit with (or block-able, dodge-able), and others just have interesting effects (like changing the weather) or improve certain combos. I like the system though, not only because it brings in a lot of the fun effects from the bullet curtain mainline games, but also because they make it feel like Touhou.
Even in the fighting games, Touhou is still bullet hell.
Here we see Meiling's spellcard portrait, more detailed than the sprite.
This one's kinda hard actually cause she'll jump and kick you if you don't move...
And sends these crystals at you if you do.
Meiling gave us less trouble than Sanae did, but that probably has to do with this no longer being the first fight, so we actually know how to play Cirno now, sort of. Going through again on hard later for the extra screenshots, she was actually more difficult than Sanae (first opponent).
Beating up random people and not remembering why: such is the life of Cirno. It's hard being the strongest.
"dot dot dot" indeed. This entire scenario makes no sense, really. Meiling's just trying to do her job and random fairies come to attack her to extort information, and then forget about the information part.
This is probably a good time to say that even though everyone looks human, most of them aren't, which leads to weird situations like the human shrine maidens attacking the youkai (spirts/demons), even though they look the same (Meiling is a youkai, totally looks like a normal person.) This is confusing, so don't worry about it, cause it doesn't really matter in this particular game anyway.
I liked this fight a lot better than Sanae's because Meiling uses a lot of melee and medium range attacks, which are what I tend toward myself, so there was a lot of mutual damage going on in some areas. Her spell cards were also more interesting because she moved around (and even tried to kick Cirno in one of them) while she did them, instead of merely standing still and having the bullets do all the work.

In a game like this, pictures work. If it was L4D? Ya I would want video. But in this case pictures are fine.

Re: Let's Play Touhou!
Taking a break from Cirno's story, just screwing around in Unthinkable Natural Law...
- Spoiler:
"OMG NO BLUE HAIR OR 14 YEAR OLDS WTF IS THIS?!?!??!?" On the left, player character Youmu/Konpaku (might be referred to as ghost or sword or something), and on the right, Alice, the doll/puppet master.
Alice is confusing to fight. She has almost no normal attacks, and the dolls don't give a lot of indication as to what they are going to do, not to mention that they can act at the same time that Alice is moving around.
A pretty attack using Konpaku's sword, though it can be difficult to land correctly.
Alice's dolls are painful as well.
They're all over the place, and when they start spinning and such it's just ridiculous to keep track of them or dodge them all, especially when they cover a large area together.
As a sword-user, Konpaku needs to close with Alice be very effective, but running into a wall of dolls with lances makes life difficult.
"I WILL HAVE YOUR HEAD, DOLLMASTER"
Our character has a human-ish body, and a ghost body too, which is the purple thing that follows her around. It comes in use during combat sometimes, though.
And it's movements are basically Konpaku's ENTIRE ranged abilities, which are very limited in scope, although they look cool. (medium range, low rate of fire because it has to return before being sent out again, and doesn't cover a large area compared to many other people's attacks)
Not sure what to say about this. I think it's pretty.
And she drew back the sword with a mighty bellow, preparing herself to cleave the foe from head to foot.
Or at the very least, deal mediocre damage ;)
Upside down Alice.
Argh! Stuck through once again by the lances of the puppets.
The ghost enacts our vengeance. It doesn't really hit very hard though, considering how big it looks. Although if Konpaku excelled at both melee and ranged, she'd be OP.
Alice shows us how to abuse the wall, kicking the PC in the back...
Biding her time, waiting as Konpaku bounces off the edge....
And then we get impaled again by those dolls. I still am not entirely sure why there's always that blue effect when damage is deal; I think it's to show that something is happening, since the sprites just overlap when the contact, and that would look weird.
"Run them through!"
Alice had uncanny dodge. However, she will not escape long.
Alice has far more health than Konpaku, who is within one hit of being dead. Unfortunately for Alice though....
"You are already dead."
Funzaku
The entire match is proof that I am bad at this game. Even on normal, Alice STILL won the first round, and I received far more consistent damage throughout than Alice ever did. Most of mine came in bursts whenever I could get close enough to Alice long enough to slash at her.
