As for the stuff after Episode VI, depends on what you're talking about. I'm not sure about "Immediately after", as I've only read The Truce at Bakura and Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor, and both were decent enough.

After that, it becomes really hit and miss. Kevin J. Anderson is responsible for a lot of misery, but there were some other contributors. Just stick to some authors like Timothy Zahn or Stackpole, and you'll do alright.
And avoid the Yuuzan Vong war.
