I thought that too, at first, but I think they did it to hide the fact that he'd stored his lightsaber inside of R2.
The only reason I could think of.

Its a weird scene to put into the beginning of the film. Wouldn't have flowed as well as the current edition does.

And I think that scene would have alluded too much to what happened later.
It made the whole sequence where R2 shot his new lightsaber to him and we saw him using it for the first time made it special, as we weren't expecting it.
