Ensemble's Once future Titles

The article explains that the notorious "Halo MMO" had actually been in development for a very long time, and that ES had nearly based its future plans on its existence and hopeful success.

The article also mentions that Halo Wars "evolved" from a primitive Martians-VS-humans RTS.

I have to admit, the article does make me feel a hint of sadness on behalf of the closing studio.

I'm glad they're closed, those games look HORRIBLE! Plus they're all RPGs and MMOs, the absolute worst game types, made by one of the absolutely worst game companies.

Do not rest in peace ES.

Anyways they already said that they're actually just closing down as ES and re opening as something else, for a fresh start. I don't see why you have to leave such an awesome legacy behind you in order for you to make new crappy games.

Not entirely true, Dud. Ensemble Studios, like RTS legend Westwood Studios before it, is being shut down because a game idea the publisher that owned them forced onto them didn't look as good as the publisher originally thought. And like WS, most of the ES employees will probably branch off to make their own new company. However, like WS, these games won't be of quite the same quality, since the publisher will hold onto a few key assets and a few others will just leave the industry. I mean, have you ever heard of Petroglyph Games? Sure, you might have heard of Star Wars: Empires at War, or Universe at War, but have you heard of the company? Will EaW ever come anywhere close to the former glory of C&C that EA destroyed? No. All noes. And EA will pay dearly for this heresy...

I read this evening that Brett Sperry and some other former Westwood Employess just set up a company called Jet Set games.

Let's hope they make something better than EA.

ES go to Hell. I hope Pottinger gets his old job back as a lowly AI programmer, and I hope Graeme gets a job in Customer Service... meaning he'll have to shave his beard and hold himself to a dress code.

Given ES's track record with Halo Wars, who the Hell would trust them with a Halo MMO as far as they could throw a cheesecake underwater?

Games change. Remember, Halo started as an RTS. They even got an engine up and had it going, not hard to believe that they got so far with it.

So true, that Halo MMO looked like a disgrace to the Halo universe, kinda like halo wars, but more extreme.

It was obvious SOMEONE was makign a Halo MMO when MS researchers wrote up a report on getting the Halo 3 engine to properly run in a MMO style game without a server.

The Halo MMO might work, but it needs a dedicated developer that won't screw up Halo.
