Halo Wars Demo
I've looked a couple times, and haven't seen any threads about it, so I thought maybe you guys could appreciate an inside look at the demo. I don't know if any other members were part of the early giveaway, since most of you have left HWF.
Story: I'm not going to give anything away, but the story was alright. The first two levels were pretty simple, and the story was intriguing. From the two levels I got, I didn't see any major breaches of canon, but then, I also didn't see the Flood or much of anything else, so that may be why.
Skirmish: This was actually a lot more fun than I expected. I had my reservations about the system, and while I still have my doubts about the socketed bases, I think the economy is just right. Because the controller limits your ability to macromanage your army, it would be too difficult to micromanage villagers. I'm not a fan of the spoon fed economy as an idea, but I think Halo Wars did the right thing with the economy. As for units, while it felt slightly rock paper scissory, that's alright. Overall, the unit balance was pretty decent, though the über units were obviously much more über (once I got a Scarab, the UNSC was pretty much finished). I felt like the Ghost and Warthog were a bit underpowered, easily destroyed by small groups of two or three infantry, and so I never really used them. The Banshee also felt a bit underpowered. I only ever built them to counter Hornets, but the Vampire is twice as effective at anti-air.
Use Interface: This was really important to me, since it was really what defined Halo Wars as a successful RTS on the console. The way I interface with the game is key to how well I can play it. And the user interface wasn't all that bad. Sure, I prefer the good old fashioned keyboard and mouse to the controller, but at the end of the day, Halo Wars gets the job done. The circle menu is simple and easy to use, clearly an act of pure genius as far as UI goes. There were a few little things, though, that bugged me. From my brief experience, there didn't seem to be a way to select multiple units precisely. In a PC RTS, for example, if you hold shift while selecting units, the previously selected stay selected. While Halo Wars offers the paintbrush select and the double click select, as well as an all units and on screen units buttons, it it either doesn't offer a precision multi-selection or the button is intuitive enough for the average gamer to figure out easily. This makes selecting certain units out of a group a bit harder. I also noticed that ordering units across long distances would sometimes confuse them, and that if I blocked a chokepoint with units, other units would become confused when ordered through the choke point, so it is reasonable to say that unit intelligence pathfinding isn't of the highest quality.
Canon: The all important canon, which was and is one of my primary concerns. I already stated I didn't see anything wrong in the story, but then, the glimpse of the story is very brief, and the levels very simple. You get Marines and Warthogs and fight only basic Covenant units, and that's about it. A plus from E3 07, I noticed that explosive damage has been increased a bit, so that you don't sit there pounding away at a Warthog with a fuel rod, and have it just shaking about hit after hit. However, there were a few things I noticed in multiplayer that I'm assuming will be in single player. Probably the biggest is the presense of shields on the SPARTAN-IIs. The MJOLNIR Mk.V, the first variant with shields, wasn't invented until 2552, and as this takes place in 2531, shields on Spartans in campaign would be a breach of canon. It sounds little, but in the grander scheme of things, it cheapens the feeling of just how amazing Spartans are, when you consider how long they were in combat with only three real KIA and one WIA prior to Reach, all without shields. And, obviously, there is the Spartans vaulting through the air to jack aircraft, which I don't think is the right direction to take either. Furthermore, Spartans do have Spartan Lasers as an upgrade to their weapons. Also, the MAC Blast is still there, and can even comprise up to four shots. I didn't notice a lot of problems on the Covenant's end, other than the ominous Banshees that just hover. However, mind you, I haven't gotten a look at any of Forge's, Anders's, Shirley's, or the Brute Chieftain's unique units, so there are still some things yet to be seen.
All of the below is based on the Halo Wars demo, primarily Skirmish and the scrolling tips on the main menu. Mind you, this may not be 100% accurate, since Skirmish only allows me to play as Captain Cutter and Prophet of Regret, but it should be around 95% accurate. I'm particularly unsure about the Brute Chieftain leader upgrades, the order of the Arbiter leader upgrades, and the order of the Gremlin unit upgrades. I'm also not completely sure on the Brute Chieftain's unique unit. I've read through the scrolling tips, and it seems to make references to Brutes with Jump Packs as being separate from the Brute Chieftain, but also makes clear references to a Brute Chopper. I'm also not entirely sure what leader powers Sergeant Forge and Professor Anders get in place of the ODST Drop Captain Cutter gets, but the scrolling tips make it clear that ODST are only available to Captain Cutter. All of the below is based on the Halo Wars game manual. It should be 100% accurate.

Re: Halo Wars Demo
Wow, thanks for that Rot. That's a lot of cataloging...
I fear that Halo Wars may not be SO horrible... but dare I say it?
Those tripple flipping, 300 ft jumping spartans are what will always keep me from buying the game... that along with my absolutely absent interest in it. I just don't care. I just don't see anything in it.
As for the rock paper scissors feel... It's a Ensemble game. AoE feels JUST like that.
The whole shield issue is indeed a canon flaw, though I don't see how they could have made spartans special without shields... not to say they are forgiven.

Re: Halo Wars Demo
Technically speaking, Seath, we just got our bandwidth back for the beginning of February. I'll give it a week and hope it sticks this time.
But ya, the game isn't as bad as I thought, gameplay-wise. The canon needs some work, for sure, but gameplay-wise, it is actually kinda fun. I'll probably try to get it. The little insight into the campaign has intrigued me.

Re: Halo Wars Demo
Very detailed Rot, but I'd like to add a few things
1. The URF are in the game. In the Skirmish map they hold all the other potential base building sites.
2. The Spartans don't have shields, it's supposed some regenerating armour or crap like that, even if it has the shield noise and is blue, like all the Covenant shields (Trust me, I don't believe that for one second).
3. Spamming is a successful strategy. If I can win a match only using Grunts squads, you know there's a problem.
4. The enemy AI seems a little varied, with them sometimes just letting you mop the floor with them, and other they constantly attack you. It mixes the game up, but it can also drive up the difficulty if you weren't expecting it.

Go ahead.
Vigil wrote:1. The URF are in the game. In the Skirmish map they hold all the other potential base building sites.
So those buggers are the URF, then? That makes sense. They also guard neutral Forerunner structures.
Vigil wrote:2. The Spartans don't have shields, it's supposed some regenerating armour or crap like that, even if it has the shield noise and is blue, like all the Covenant shields (Trust me, I don't believe that for one second).
I'm with you. It's blue and it even has all of the shield noises, but they want us to believe it isn't a shield? Armor can't regenerate. We've been telling them not to give Spartans shields this whole time, and now they're talking out their ass trying to justify it.
Vigil wrote:3. Spamming is a successful strategy. If I can win a match only using Grunts squads, you know there's a problem.
Spamming can be successful, but against Normal and Heroic AI, it isn't, so I doubt it would work too well against human players either. With the rock paper scissors feel, spamming becomes much harder. Spamming Grunts/Marines, for example, means the other player should spam Jackals/Flamethrowers and Wraiths/Scorpions. Unless you mean spamming two units that work well together. That works just great. You spam a unit and then the counter for the counter of that unit, and you're good to go, usually.
Vigil wrote:4. The enemy AI seems a little varied, with them sometimes just letting you mop the floor with them, and other they constantly attack you. It mixes the game up, but it can also drive up the difficulty if you weren't expecting it.
I certainly noticed this. Not only do they vary on whether they turtle or rush, but they vary strategies, too. Usually, they focus on one type of unit, whether it be infantry, ground vehicle, or aircraft. In my first game, I was harassed lightly by infantry, and then raped by Scorpions. In my second game, they rushed me with Vultures out of no where way earlier than I was expecting even Scorpions, and I only managed to stabilize my second base. In a more recent game, they rushed with large numbers of infantry, which my turrets ate alive, and then I built two Scarabs (I had three bases, two that were just Blessed Warehouses, and both Supply Elevators, so I had about 60000 supplies when I did this ) and marched across the middle and raped them hardcore.

I personally don't know how I won. I didn't want to lie, so I posted about how I was excited to see Halo being made into an RTS. I even mentioned how it wasn't the way I would have done it in the post. It was kind of a last minute you-never-know kind of thing, like when I signed up for the Legendary Map Pack giveaway and won.
KrAzY wrote:I know what thread that was... I was the one who caused the big fight in that thread

I'm with you. It's blue and it even has all of the shield noises, but they want us to believe it isn't a shield? Armor can't regenerate. We've been telling them not to give Spartans shields this whole time, and now they're talking out their ass trying to justify it.

Seriously, since when has that been a surprise? They did it with the Cyclops, Cyrobomb, Spartan Laser, Chain gun, hyperleaps, and the Vampire.
What the Hell is a Gremlin? Besides a rather trustworthy but ugly car of the 1970s?
And did you get that PM I sent you?

Re: Halo Wars Demo
The reason you got it Rot, was you were going to be in the Halo Wars Alpha, like several of us were.
I'm surprised you didn't get one Krazy, as I thought you were in the alpha as well.

The Bad News: The external portion of the project has been postponed. The decision was made to first have the development team test the title internally within Microsoft before implementing any external / public stages of the project.
The Good News: The delay will allow us to provide a more complete experience, in an external phase. Also all those that were qualified for the postponed portion of the test have been placed on the top of the list for any future external portions of testing.

Yes, I had exactly the same thing. It's odd you didn't recieve a PM from Lethe, as he pursued me on the site, he sent two PM's to get my attention.
Have you checked them lately? If not, ask them for one.

Well Paragon hates me, he's always shown me the cold shoulder. Every time I've asked him for help or asked him a question, he ignored me.
