Wow... that really sucks. How deep is it?Spekwyse wrote:Well thankfully my family is okay now, but some of my friends' houses are under water. :-\
Re: hurricane sandy
at least as deep as a house is tall. At that point what does it matter how deep it is?

Re: hurricane sandy
the winds aren't what did the damage, the size of the storm was unprecedented and meant that the storm surge was massive, never mind that the area isn't one that gets hit by hurricanes often.

Re: hurricane sandy
I live 40ft above sea level on Long Island, so no water troubles for me. Unfortunately, we lost every tree on our property and had a tree explode right next to the powerlines (which are in the woods for these older neighborhoods). Still don't have power, but LIPA says they'll have it done for sure by tomorrow. Luckily, hot water. Unluckily, no hot air. My parrot has arthritis and isn't doing well.
I feel bad for the people in Staten Island and Nassau, and New Jersey. They had it a lot worse than we did here in Suffolk.

Re: hurricane sandy
So I work at a tech support call center for AT&T U-verse, and one of the states we cover is Connecticut. We've received some hilarious calls thus far.
Rep: "AT&T, my name is <>, can I get your first and last name?"
Cus: "<>."
Rep: "Alright Mr. <>, how may I help you?"
Cus: "My Internet's not working."
Rep: "I see that you're located in Connecticut. Do you have power?"
Cus: "Yes. I plugged in my generator."
Rep: "Alright, but without it, would you have power?"
Cus: "Well no."
Rep: "Then it's very likely that our facilities in Connecticut are either without power, damaged, or that the lines between you and them are damaged. This is why your Internet is not working."
Cus: "Alright, but my house is on fire."
Rep: "What!? Why did you call us instead of the fire department?"
Cus: "Because my Internet isn't working."
Rep: "...Please call the fire department."

Cus: "No, my power's out too."

Cus: "I don't understand. Why don't I have power?"
Rep: "You heard about Hurricane Sandy, right?"
Cus: "Of course, but that was two days ago. The power should be up by now."
Rep: "Could you look outside for me? Describe what the street is like."
Cus: "I can't even drive. There are trees and telephone poles down all over."
Rep: "So do you understand why your power is not back yet?"
Cus: "No. It's been two days. It should be back up by now!"
Rep: "...We're not your power company, Mrs. <>."
Cus: "Oh...right. Alright, well I'll call them."
