Glow Sushi
Okay, so I've been thinking. You know how science has created fish that glow incandescently? Well, these fish (zebra fish) are really small and just sold as novelty pets basically. BUT what if you were to put the same proteins (green fluorescent protein) into larger fish for commercial consumption (like salmon and tuna) and had them glow and then sell them to Sushi Makers to have GLOWING SUSHI! It can only work with sushi too, cooking the fish would denature the protein sequences and render it useless.
The only problem I see here (beside the fact that genetic modification is not as simple as I described it) is that A. The general consumer population would be hesitant to eat glowing food (as they irrationally relate glowing to irradiation) and B. What if the process renders the new fish breed sterile? It would be hard to mass produce them in that case I am assuming.

the first and second issue are both squashed by it being another level of luxury. Like really expensive for rich people. Because rich people like things that are only for them, even if they don't taste any better.

What you just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.
Everyone on this site is now dumber for having read it.

This is genetics.Nocbl2 wrote:If only sushi operated with Pinkie Physics...
No matter how small the market would be for this, and I don't think it would be that small given how people are really into fads even if they're stupid or dangerous, it is still a good idea I think. I wonder if investors would be interested in something like this.

The thing is, I think that the GM Zebrafish you're talking about rely on bioluminescence, not chemoluminescence. So, that sushi would have to be REAL fresh.

Re: Glow Sushi
Hmm, what do you mean?
From what I understand they would of course rely on bioluminescence, there are no reactions causing them to glow, they simply glow "naturally".
GloFish were created by taking a gene from jellyfish to cause it to glow fluorescently and microinjecting it directly into a zebra fish embryo.
So why can't the same exact thing be done with any other fish? I think it can be. I don't know to what extent or intensity the fish would glow though.

That sounds like the ultimate "fuck you" to nature since making white water rapid parks out of concrete just because we can.

Re: Glow Sushi
There has to be a reaction for it to give off light, so I don't think that the fish stores the materials necessary to cause them to glow for very long. Once the fish is dead, the light will go out very quickly.Gauz wrote:Hmm, what do you mean?

Re: Glow Sushi
True, the fish absorb either natural white light or ultraviolet light then "send it back out" in order to give the effect of fluorescence.
I don't know if the fish has to be alive for this to happen though. Perhaps the protein absorbs the light then reflects it, in which case if the protein is still intact and not denatured after it's dead it still may glow.
I'm not exactly sure about this though. Maybe I can buy some glofish then kill them and see if they still glow if they're dead.
