It has been said that Prometheus was originally intended as a prequel to Ridley Scott's Alien, but Scott decided to turn it into an original film with Noomi Rapace (who was already set to star in the prequel) still in the cast as one of five main characters. Some time later however it was confirmed that while the movie will take place in the same universe as Alien, and greatly reference that movie, it will, for the bigger part, be an original movie and not a direct prequel.
I am looking forward to this greatly.

I had heard he was directing a new Alien Prequel and saw this which doesn't really show if it is or not and after reading your post....

Well, it's the same ship, but whether the egg chamber is breached is unknown.
Now, the thing is that Prometheus takes place thirty years before Aliens. That's probably around the time that the colony in Aliens was established, but about thirty years before Burke ordered the colonists to investigate the ship.
Hmm... I believe that we'll be witnessing horrors emerge from that ship that are NOT xenomorphs...

Maybe we'll finally explore who's ship that actually was, and why it crashed there with such deadly cargo on-board.
The Ship was centuries old and had been there a long time. Could it possibly be the original occupants in this film?

When did they do that? I don't recall them ever being named or seen in Alien or Aliens.

I would advise against watching the latest trailer. If you're familiar with the alien universe, you could pretty much guess at the plot from what they showed.

Ok. It's been a long time guys. I feel like it's time I return... and explain why this movie was the most poorly written pile of disappointment I've ever seen.

The original alien was a hard sci-fi horror movie. It had perfect, careful pacing, a cast of scientists/engineers who had somewhat rugged, but uniquely interesting personalities, and a setting/subject that was seriously fucking terrifying. (as a side note, I think horror is by far the best compliment to science fiction. Alien and the Terminator are enough)
The sequel, Aliens, was, like Terminator 2 to the first Terminator, more action oriented, and high budget. It was still very well written, and, to a much greater degree than Terminator 2, preserved the atmosphere of the first film. Aliens was a little heavy in fan service, (Ripley running around, killing Alien queens and shit,) but it was still a really good movie.
Prometheus tries to be a lot of things. It tries to be a sci-fantasy epic. It tries to be a thriller. It tries to be a horror movie. It tries to have a mysterious, complex plot. It tries to send all kinds of messages. It had some really great set pieces, (the alien removal scene, though kind of out of place, was really well done,) but it mostly did a pretty bad job at all of those things.
Instead of taking time to say all of this well, I'm just going to list off and explain my problems with it:
1. exposition, exposition, exposition
The movie opened with what felt like 30 minutes of blatant exposition. The opening scene is a flash back to billions of years ago. After that you see the explorers being told about the mission by way of a futuristic, minority report style power point. We have to sit through this slide show because the people who wrote the film couldn't come up with a more clever way of explaining things, and thought themselves too good to use a nice crawl.
(honestly, what happened to opening movies with a couple paragraphs of text? It might seem lazy, but it's better than wasting the audience's time with 30 minutes of crap.)
The old guy's speech was the worst part of it all. It was seriously hard to watch.
2. Extreme personalities
A good writer can create characters with interesting personalities, and incorporate their attitudes/differences with subtlety. In Prometheus, most notable characters have annoying, and unrealistically strong/aggressive personalities.
The lead guy is really, really annoying. He's hyperactive, argumentative, over-reactive, and really pretty stupid. Charlize Theron's characters is un-naturally uptight and weird. The geologist guy is 10 times as argumentative as the lead guy, and unreasonably aggressive. (The part where he was smoking pot through his space suit was just stupid.)
The lead female is alright. I think they were trying for a strong female character, like Ripley in the other movies. I guess she mostly fulfills that, though not really in the same way. Ripley is a true, strong female character. She cool. She's always put together. She's smart, knows what she's doing, takes the lead, and winds of being the only one to survive BECAUSE of her superior attributes. (She's not really sexualized in any way either. When she strips to her underwear at the end of the first film, it's not much of an attention-grabber.)
The lead in Prometheus is strong, but definitely still notably female. She's fairly naive. She's a sort of sensitive. Definitely more emotional. She cries on multiple occasions. Beyond that she LOOKS more feminine. She's got pretty hair and a pretty face. She has a more feminine voice. They point the camera on her ass a fair number of times.
Still, she is brave, and she is daring, and all that shit. She's definitely more appealing to me than Ripley, but she's definitely not as good of a character. Still, she's better than the rest of the movie. (I might just feel that way because of the ass shots.)
Michael Fassbender, the guy who played the android, was really great. There's not much you can say about the character, since he's not human, but I didn't really like the way they USED him. The whole evil robot thing is used in just about every space movie (except Moon,) but I still love it. Evil robots are great. What I don't like about Fassbender's character is the degree to which the movie exploits him to hammer in some cliche message. (I'll get to that later.) But again, he played it incredibly well. Every line was delivered just as it should have been, and his movements/demeanor was great.
The black captain guy was well acted, and well written. I really liked him, and I'm glad he's in there, but he's nothing to really commend the writers for. He's pretty standard.
3. Convoluted plot
The writing is bad, and so is the plot itself. The entire character of the old guy is just stupid. So is Charlize Theron's character. The plot, which is built around those two characters, therefore sucks.
The concept of humans having been engineered by some Alien race is fine, but it seems way too hefty for an Alien movie.There's no reason for it. The guys who made this movie were tasked with explaining humanities first encounter with the Aliens. They had enough on their table. They didn't need to try to explain the origin of human life.
If it was well executed, I guess it'd be alright, but it was clearly too much to cover in a 2 hour movie. It winds up feeling rushed and disjointed, and overly complex.
4. Theme Rape
The movie has a lot of messages. They're sort of cliche, but they'd be alright if the writers were capable of incorporating them in a more subtle way. Instead, they just have the characters say everything out loud.
A lot of what the movie has to say revolves around the Android character. It has to do with the point at which something can be considered alive, or having a soul, and the meaning of live, and all that good stuff.
To be honest, I'm not sure if these concepts are really fitting for an Alien movie. The Androids in previous alien movies have been VERY robotic in personality, which is spooky in and of itself. The android in Prometheus is less grim and utilitarian. I don't really care about canon in a series of movies like Alien, so I don't mind the fact that they would mix things up like that, and given that he's a different, more expensive model, it may not even be an inconsistency. I just think I prefer the other approach.
Either way, the way they went about executing it was REALLY lazy. The scenes near the opening where Fassbender was practicing human emotion were a little indiscreet, (and straight out of star trek,) but still alright. After that, it just gets annoying. When the movie gets to dollar theaters, I'm gonna go see it again, and take a notepad to tally up the number of times the characters blatantly express that he is a robot.
He puts on a helmet: "Hey, you don't need a helmet, you're a robot."
He's offered a drink: "It will be a waste. I'm a robot and I can't drink."
He expresses sympathy: "You don't know how I feel, You're a robot."
He's asked if he's disappointed: "I would be but I'm a robot"
He says he's afraid: "You're a robot, you can't fear. I can because I'm human!!"
WE GET IT! HE'S A ROBOT! You don't have to spell it out in every scene he's in.
Some of the conversations, like the one between the lead and the android about the meaning of life are fine, but they feel kind of forced and, again, cliche.
5. inconsistent, kinda sterile Mood
The first two Alien movies are fucking Gritty. Certain parts of Prometheus are full of wonderment, and big landscape shots, but most it is a little plain. It tries to have the mood of a thriller, and it does a really good job of it in a few scenes around the middle of the movie, but then it stops. This isn't a very quantifiable complaint, but it just feels a little lacking.
6. Incomprehensible Behavior
They go to the planet because the two lead researchers think it's home to the Engineers of the human species.
When they explain the mission to their crew, they pretty much just get laughed at. It's believable that the crew would doubt their theory, but why is it that none of them are even a little surprised or excited about the discovery of FUCKING CAVE DRAWINGS on a planet other than Earth.
In the Alien universe, at this point, Humans have yet to discover any form of life beyond Earth. The whole premise of the first Alien movie is built on this notion. They stop to investigate because all human ships are required by law (or maybe it was just company policy,) to investigate any sign of alien life (intelligent or not.) They bring in the first Alien because they're required to.
In Prometheus, the two leads go crazy about seeing old alien structures, but the rest of the crew seems completely unimpressed by their encounters. Given the circumstances, they should have been jumping with glee over the discovery of a plant, or a single bacteria. A meal worm should have made them faint from excitement. Instead, after finding the remains of suited up, high tech, intelligent, humanoid aliens, they still just sit their and ridicule the idea that humans were created.
WHY AREN'T YOU GUYS EXCITED!?!?
Beyond that, most of the characters are incredibly stupid. The only smart people are made out to be evil. They go out without helmets (even after someone has been infected with what could, for all they know, have been airborne,) they insist on bringing an infected person ONTO THE SHIP. They apparently don't understand the concept of moving SIDE TO SIDE. That scene with the falling space ship is like that cartoon set piece where someone is running away from a train (when they could just step off the tracks.)
Overall, I was really disappointed. It seems like such wasted potential. The universe is great. The visuals are amazing. The music is awesome. I really wanted this movie to be good, and I went in there with a pretty open attitude. I expected the boring exposition, and some flimsy writing, but the plot was so much worse than I expected. (and the writing too.)
I really hope people will start making sci-fi movies that aren't epics. Epics are great, but they're really, really, really hard to do, and they usually take more than 2 hours. Ridley Scott is still one of my favorite directors. Alien and Blade Runner are two of the best 5 or 6 sci-fi movies of all time. This movie just didn't live up to his reputation, though I guess It was probably well directed.

I found promethius to be entertaining and I do want a sequel.
there were some amateurish mistakes made in the film but people are seriously overreacting to it... I would say its better than 70% of the crap sci-fi films that have come out recently
