How did you find them? I haven't read them yet
They're supposed to be quite intense.

I'm a bit of an R.A. Salvatore fan, and I also read Signal to Noise and A Signal Shattered by Eric Nylund, which were both good books.

-Anything by Terry Pratchett.
-Eon by Greg Bear.
-Calculating God by Robert Sawyer
-Stalingrad by Antony Beevor
-The Call of Cthulhu, and other Lovecraft tales.
Just tossed aside a William C. Dietz book. I guess his new stuff doesn't measure up to the old.

Shadows In The Jungle: The Alamo Scouts Behind Japanese Lines In World War II
The little-known Alamo Scouts were formed by Gen. Douglas MacArthur as an elite unit shortly after defeat in the Philippines in 1942 and charged with gathering intelligence, reporting on conditions in the occupied areas, and rescuing prisoners and hostages from the Japanese. They completed 108 missions behind enemy lines, are credited with killing over 500+ Japanese soldiers, and never sustained a casualty.

Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption (I highly recommend this book)
On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.
The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he’d been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.
Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

The Eagle Has Landed
It was to become known as the most daring enemy mission of the entire war: Operation Eagle, SS Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler's audacious plan to kidnap Winston Churchill on British soil in November 1943.
But, despite spectacular secrecy, there was to be no surrender without a fight...
For in a remote corner of Norfolk, an elite unit is gathered together. Ready to do battle for a nation against the most ruthless task force ever assembled.

War of the Rats
For six months in 1942, Stalingrad is the center of a titanic struggle between the Russian and German armies—the bloodiest campaign in mankind's long history of warfare. The outcome is pivotal. If Hitler's forces are not stopped, Russia will fall. And with it, the world....
German soldiers call the battle Rattenkrieg, War of the Rats. The combat is horrific, as soldiers die in the smoking cellars and trenches of a ruined city. Through this twisted carnage stalk two men—one Russian, one German—each the top sniper in his respective army. These two marksmen are equally matched in both skill and tenacity. Each man has his own mission: to find his counterpart—and kill him.
But an American woman trapped in Russia complicates this extraordinary duel. Joining the Russian sniper's cadre, she soon becomes one of his most talented assassins—and perhaps his greatest weakness. Based on a true story, this is the harrowing tale of two adversaries enmeshed in their own private war—and whose fortunes will help decide the fate of the world.
All of these books are good reads, pretty high among books that I can list.
