I'm alright...I guess...
Well, I got into a car accident today. My car is totaled. I'm putting up pictures.
What happened:
Since it is vital to know the road I was on, might as well tell you where I live.
I was heading north bound on Highway 28 (Iowa 28) going the speed limit of 45 mph.
The other car was heading south on 28. She began swerving and I tried to get out of the way. She t-boned me on the driver's side. I went into the ditch. Not too far in. However, she went WAY into the ditch, as if there was speed involved on her part. I called 911 instantly and got police and ambulance. I was taken to the hospital. No major damage, just some bruising. I'm fine and she's fine. I just need to go car shopping again and set up a claim...my mom and Sam are at the police station right now.
The Pictures:
The front looks ok...
Left side view. Tire damaged...Both windows busted
Another left side view. Bumper gone...Dent more apparent
Rear view. Bumper gone...Left turn signal smashed
Right side view. Bumper gone...no apparent damage
Left side windows. All shattered...You can see the inside part of the car smashed into my stuff
EDIT: This is actually my car. I got confirmation from my mother and this was taken on the other side of the ravine.
Me going into the ambulance. I wasn't sure what extent my body suffered...so we were both taken to the hospital
(I'm finding the pic for the other car...it'll be up soon)
Results:
We're finally a claim as we speak. I had to write a statement. I'm not sure who the other driver was but she's from Des Moines. Also found out that it wasn't her car that she hit me with.

Good to know you're OK. Hope the insurance companies don't make you jump through the hoops.
Lessee here... it is legal to part a car out for cash if it's been totaled? I've done it before, but I wasn't doing it to sell the parts.
And this might sound odd, but for posterity's sake... what did it sound like?

It was too real...like...You've seen it on tv...two cars hit...metal crunching...tires screeching...but what they don't show you...is the real trauma after the crash...I'm going to be haunted with the song that was playing during my crash...
And I loved this song...

Re: I'm alright...I guess...
I know what you're talking about. I had a similar thing happen to me when i was skiing. I was going really fast (and i'm a really good skier so i mean really fast) and my ski caught a lip of ice. Went down hard, totally disoriented, got brought down by someone from the ski patrol. Didn't have a concussion, but it was surreal.Maeve wrote:What did it sound like? um, totalled means that repairs cost more than replacing the entire vehicle.

Re: I'm alright...I guess...
Do you realize how much it costs to repair an axle and the frame of the car? Unless that was a high end sports car, it's totaled.
Re: I'm alright...I guess...
i just know that its easy to do
and no way an axle costs more than a whole car. entirely possible thats just the hub anyway

Re: I'm alright...I guess...
Sorry, NT. That's a Hundai Accent, a fairly entry-level car.
We're looking at hub, frame (Not just body, FRAME), and suspension damage, even if the axle itself is A-OK. Window needs replaced, interior is probably shot, bumper will have to be bought and re-mounted (Fortunately, that's pretty cheap)
The parts alone might not total the car (Probably will) but the labor costs will.
Really, there's times to be a contrarian, and times to extend your condolences. In this case, I extend my condolences to Maeve and hope she gets well soon.

Re: I'm alright...I guess...
Oh god no...it was just a normal car. In fact, after all the taxes...it was $3100. So if we attempt to even fix it...it'll be totaled... :/Rotaretilbo wrote:Do you realize how much it costs to repair an axle and the frame of the car? Unless that was a high end sports car, it's totaled.
EDIT: I'm alright. I am feeling so sore right now. My entire left side is really sore and the right side of my neck is sore. My friend said whiplash for my neck. I think my side was from the impact of the other car. I'll be fine...if I just take it easy for the next few days, I'll be fine.

Re: I'm alright...I guess...
NT, the rear axel was smashed in. You don't fix a car's axle when it's destroyed; you buy a new car. She bought that thing used for $2,000. Do you honestly think repairs for that are going to be less than $2,000? It's reasonably safe to assume it's totaled. Please don't be a jerk.KristallNacht wrote:um, totalled means that repairs cost more than replacing the entire vehicle.

But everyone knows enough of "that stuff" to tell when a car is totaled. My car is done. It's gone. It's not worth repairing. The repairs are more than what it's worth. I only got the thing for $3100 after taxes. Only problem was is it only had about 83,300 miles on it...

Cause in the forces you're just fixing vehicles/equipment/whatever and being paid a solid salary.
As a civilian mechanic there are more things involved. They're charging people for time used fixing the vehicle, ordering the parts, paying the workers. That kind of stuff. All of which bumps the price of the fix. I know some mechanics that fix something in 2 hours and charge a day's worth of work. So, you need to keep those things in mind too.

Not to mention that the kinda things you're gonna fix in the armed forces are gonna be a tad more expensive than $3100.Baconsen wrote:I thought you learn how to fix stuff there.KristallNacht wrote:Ascendant Justice wrote:KristallNacht wrote:I'm sorry...
