Intel X-25 M SSD
Alright, I got a hold of an SSD, and I'm about to load my system on it.
Needless to say, I'm about to have the fastest computer in the South East. I'll put up some speed tests later when I have everything working.

Re: Intel X-25 M SSD
It will do wonders for start up and load times, but it shouldn't affect the actually frame rate too much.
Re: Intel X-25 M SSD
nor should it affect download and copy speeds....

Re: Intel X-25 M SSD
It doesn't affect download speeds, but it's access time is about 40 times faster then a hard disk. It's probably about 4 times faster overall then a physical hard drive.
Hard drives are the slowest part of the computer, aside from the network connection, so it definitely is an improvement.
However, I forgot to bring all my CD keys, so I can't install any games atm.

Re: Intel X-25 M SSD
im pretty sure its static state.
meaning none of its pieces like move...
like how a hard drive spins and has a needle and shit

Its solid state drive, and nt is right about it not having any moving parts.

lol seriously?
hell, on toshiba laptops you can pull up a simulated view of the harddrive including the angle it is currently at and if you shake it it stops spinning so that it won't take damage from falls.

Re: Intel X-25 M SSD
Just asked my dad about it, and he said it's pretty much a giant flash drive. It's been used in jets for a long time because it isn't really damaged by high Gs.

Solid State is great but discs are cheaper

Re: Intel X-25 M SSD
Even for the extra cost, I think they're worth it in laptops just because of how frequently the damn things get moved around while runningRingleader wrote:Kasrkin Seath wrote:Solid State is great but discs are cheaper

Re: Intel X-25 M SSD
all laptops come with gyroscopes and hard drive locks.
to test this on your laptop, lay i on your stomach, watch a movie or video from your harddrive, and cough. it will pause cause the harddrive stopped spinning

Flash memory. That's basically what an SSD is from my understanding, a huge fucking flash drive.Avenged wrote:So what does an iphone use????

Re: Intel X-25 M SSD
Actually, something my dad told me about SSDs is that if you write something onto a spot and then erase it and so on long enough, it will degrade fairly rapidly.

Re: Intel X-25 M SSD
Yeah, it has firmware that distributes the read write process evenly across the drive to prevent this, also defragmentation doesn't have any benefits.
