CF should contemplate IRC
You guys (the higher ups) should consider getting an IRC server. It's much better than that chatbox. You would also be able to get a web-interface for it that would be installed in the same place as the chatbox, but with 10x better features.
I'm not sure of how many of you use, or have used IRC before, but it's fucking great. You can get your own IRC clients (mIRC, HydraIRC, etc. ), or you can use the web interfaces (Mibbit), but either way, it's amazing for any community. It runs a lot more fluidly than the chatbox, is much cleaner and simpler, yet it has the potential to add some pretty cool shit to it, as well as the standard features like user-created channels and client scripts.
I'm having a bit of trouble justifying the need to get one, but yeah I don't see how you could regret setting up an IRC server because essentially its just a much better version of the Chatbox that is easier to moderate, has a lot more potential, has a number of interfaces to suit usage, and is just cooler. If you do go with an IRC server, I can almost guarantee that people will use it more than they currently use Chatbox.
The only issue I can think of is where it would be hosted. Is CF hosted on a dedi box or is it just one of those phpBB hosting bundles with a domain? If the latter, then you'd probably have to pay $5 a month or so, or have somebody set up one at home. I am getting estimates for bandwidth, but it is definitely less than 1 gig per month or so, potentially much much less for the potential amount of users and activity.
Anyway, thoughts?

Anything off site = fail
anything you have to pay for = fail
otherwise... IRC = win

I suggested this when I first came here. I'm not really sure how you'd set it up though.

I need LP or somebody else to tell me if CF is hosted on a dedicated box. If it is, you can install ircd onto the dedi box that allows connections over the IRC protocol. Then, you link Mibbit (a web interface for IRC) to the CF IRC server hosted on the dedi box, and you're given a clean and easy to use interface that can be embedded straight into any webpage on here, preferably on its own page, but on the home page would be possible too.
If this is a dedi box, which I'm hoping it is, but fairly sure it isn't, this won't cost a cent. If it isn't a dedi box, then this may cost a little, but it potentially can cost nothing if somebody home hosts an IRC server, something which I am willing to do, and capable of. The IRC server that I used to frequent had about 10-15 users at any given time, and was active with conversation for about 4-5 hours each day. It uses less than 1gb a month, so a CF one would probably use even less than that, maybe even <500mb or so.
And to the guy who said "what is IRC", IRC is essentially a plain-text online chat protocol, that requires a program to access. You have an IRC server, which you connect to using an IRC client, and then you just chat in it. It's pretty simple.
You can check out Mibbit here: http://www.mibbit.com/

Sounds pretty interesting.
It would be cool if we were able to get one.

Did you read any of this though? You most likely blatantly ignored it for the sake of making a petty and insignificant point, because I actually asked you if TCF was run off of a dedicated box.
Also, if it's The Crimson Flame, why is it only Crimson Flame in the URL and the header? :/

Re: CF should contemplate IRC
Not really a power trip, its just that i've ran this site going on two full years now and I would appreciate it if it is called by the correct name.
I have before looked into other chatbox methods and they do not work with how this site is configured.
Do you honestly think you are the first one to come in and recommend another form of chat service? That you are the all knowing brain of us all who has the ideas that we jump around at your feet waiting to lap up whatever thoughts you so graciously bestow upon us?
It's not an ego trip, I just want to put a T infront of CF. Not that difficult I do not think.

and the header says
"Crimson Flame, the official site of THE Crimson Flame" as well.
Re: CF should contemplate IRC
A lower case t in "the" can easily be perceived as not part of the name.Lord Pheonix wrote:

Yeah as I said, enjoy your power trip. I'm simply suggesting that an IRC server be considered. I'm not saying, or even implying "Get one for me", nor am I implying any sort of superiority or superior knowledge yet you somehow managed to perceive that admist your ego-fueled attempt at creating some sort of conflict out of a mere suggestion. Well done, and setting a wonderful example for the rest of the "minions" to follow suit.
And you may want to update your header, "Crimson Flame", and your alternate URL, "crimsonflame.forumotion.com", as they entirely invalidate your unnecessary argument.

I simply asked for you to put a "T" infront of "CF" and you started insulting me for no fair reason by saying im on an ego trip. The fault began with you and I merely reacted in suit.
