I want to say sales tax but i feel this problem was designed to be like this, especially because you would logically give your parents $1.50 each.

Isn't it because you kept the dollar for yourself? If you gave the dollar to either of your parents the total would equal $97 so "the missing dollar" is really the person being a greedy fuck.

Because you only used 97$ to buy the shirt, not $100, so there's no reason to owe both of them $50. You owe one $50, and one 47$, so 47+50+1+1+1=100.

The equation is irrelevant. What you owe plus what you keep should not equal what you were lent. You would need to add what you owe plus what you paid to equal what you were lent.

I think it comes down to the fact you owe two separate people an odd amount of money.

its not a math problem, its a logic/word problem. Most people just assume the words are doing their job and the numbers are the issue, but the words are the bit that's fooling you.

Thats silly since you borrowed 100$ and spent 97$ of it, then used the other 3 on yourself, dad and mom. The dollar its asking about is the one it explicitly said you took. It gives you the answer before the question is asked.

Yeah. You're not using an accounting format to keep track of accounts owed/accounts receivable.

Your other problem is that you spent 97 dollars on a shirt.
