The railgun is old news. I'm ashamed by the fact we are coming along so slowly...
Another interesting fact that was left out in this article is that the final gun planned for the stealth destroyers is capable of lobbing a round into lower orbit. Once it comes down, it will hit the earth with enough kinetic energy to mimic a tactical nuclear explosion. If the navy lives up to its goal, these can be fired once every 5 seconds.

Not the vast sums of money lying around the defence budget there was a few years ago.

I saw this on wired science, it looked pretty neat however I'm not sure how they're gonna mount this on a ship, it looks too big for a turreted weapon.

It's pretty darn huge, and that's just too shoot a small, coke bottle sized projectile.

It's not that big that it cant be fitted onto a turret. Also, that coke bottle sized projectile was measured as having almost 33MJ of energy(most recent test)
