It isn't about having a free version of Portal. It's about how anyone who didn't previously have Portal is now obligated to download the game because it's free and amazing.

A game that is only 2 and a half years old! And very well known and extremely popular, it isn't some kind of dud game they are just trying to promote.
And after all the things valve have done, they deserve at least one thread on the forum anyway.

also about how valve is showing its commitment to its community and keeping gamers happy and by doing things like this people will buy more of their games because they know free content will be added
