Graphic Novels
Hey what's up Crimson Flame. I'll get right to the point. This thread is about graphic novels. (we will call them GN's)
I recently started to get really interested in them and now I crave them. I started out with Watchmen. When the movie was still prior to release I did not know exactly what Watchmen was or what the story was. So when a friend of mine let me borrow the GN, of course, I loved it.
More to the point, this made me want more. And so I've done my own shoping around for some GN's and found some that I will soon be purchasing. But I thought I'd make a thread here and ask you guys about some GN's that you think I should be looking into.
The type I really like are the dark style ones. GN's that have dark stories, art, characters, settings etc etc. Here are some example's of some that I found just today while at a book store. (which i was at for only about 45 mins so not enough time to do more search)
- Ball Peen Hammer
- Groom Lake
- JTHM
- Batman: Arkham Asylum
So, anyway, If there are any members here that have some GN knowledge or just know some great ones that have roughly the same style then please, discuss here! Of course you can discuss GN's in general as well.

Re: Graphic Novels
I've only read Watchmen, and it was fucking amazing. Not just the art, but the plot and the text.

Re: Graphic Novels
Bill Watterson:
"You can call them graphic novels and try to tackle real life issues, but comic books are still stupid."
Eh, haven't picked any up and actually started reading them, but I'm tempted to with Watchmen.

Just in retirement. Very, very reclusive retirement.

Re: Graphic Novels
I'd recommend the following.
V for Vendetta
A History Of Violence
Batman:The Dark Knight Returns.
All of those are pretty dark.

Well as much as I love Calvin and Hobbes, he sounds like quite a douche.

No, not really.ReconToaster wrote:Rasq'uire'laskar wrote:He's alive.Nocbl2 wrote:Isn't Bill Watterson dead?

He was a creative genius, but he couldn't keep up with a schedule, and he wanted more freedom with formats.
Add to that the fact that he hates commercialization, like what Garfield has gone through, and he was doomed to a limited run.
I guess he's happy where he is right now.
It was actually pretty good, but I get the feeling that a lot was left out that shouldn't have been.Objectivley Bias wrote:The movie of V for Vendetta sucks.
Would have preferred two movies that could tell the rest of the story, culminating where the actual movie ended.

Sorry, I didn't really quote what I meant to.
I meant that he was a douche for what he said about Graphic Novels ;)

Re: Graphic Novels
Yeah I found it strange that a cartoonist would say comic's are stupid.
Anyway, does anyone else have any good sugestions or am I asking for too much here?

Re: Graphic Novels
Ah.
Found the comic Watterson made the comment in.
I've got the Tenth Anniversary Calvin and Hobbes, which has Watterson's commentary written in it.
Calvin: Mom doesn't understand comic books.
She doesn't realize that comic books deal with serious issues of the day. Today's superheroes face tough moral dilemmas.
Comic books aren't just escapist fantasy. They're sophisticated social critiques.
Hobbes: Is Amazon Girl's super power the ability to squeeze that figure into that suit?
Calvin: Nah, they can all do that.
Watterson: "You can make your superhero a psychopath, you can draw gut-splattering violence, and you can call it a 'graphic novel', but comic books are still incredibly stupid."
