What to do in College Empty What to do in College

Post by LeafyOwNu2 Sat Nov 14, 2009 2:11 am

I know this is something everyone goes through at one point in time. I thought I was sure until recently.

I wanted to go to school to study veterinary medicine. I love working with animals and I loved my job working at a kennel. Then things came up and I quit my job.

Since then I've been working in Photoshop out of boredom. In the last couple of days I made stuff I never thought I could. It really brought back a part of me that I left when I started working. I really love doing design work and graphics and I missed it.

I've never been a vet. I don't know how I will react to the job, and I don't know if I will really enjoy doing it. I have done graphic design and I know I love doing it. It just seems that there are a lot of people in the graphics field already and I feel I will have a hard time finding work.

I know I need to make the decision for myself but some input on the matter would help.

Basically should I go with something I know, love, and skilled in or should I go with something new.

I'm kinda leaning toward Graphic Designer.

The bother offer something dynamic, which makes it even more of a hard decision.

Really, the only thing you should factor in is how much you're going to enjoy doing it for the next 10-20 years. Don't worry about money. You'll make enough in both careers to be content.

Well I have been doing Graphic design for 7 and 1/2 years now and I am still interested in it. No matter how good you get there will always be someone worse than you and someone better than you. There is always room to improve and room the change your style.

When your a vet you cant exactly change the way you do surgery or diagnose a dog. I'm leaning toward graphic design at this point. The classes in college look a lot more fun too XD

To be a vet you have to go through a shitload of Biology and Chemistry before you even get to go to a vet school v.v

Technically speaking, couldn't you pursue both, being a vet during the day and a graphic designer by night, and then make a career out of whichever is most pleasing to you?

I say Graphic Designer.

You love doing it, you're good at it, and you think it's fun.

I agree with Ziggy. If you enjoy making OMFGA art, movies, pictures etc. with things like Photoshop, go for it. But if you like operating on dying animals, giving them shots, grooming them, etc., go go go.

being a vet will cost 30,000 more and 4 more years of college. I dont really want to invest that much time in something that I think I wont like later on down the road.

But since i'm having those second thoughts about being a vet it kinda makes me think I shouldn't do it. I should purse a skill that makes me happy and that I will have no second thoughts about.

Thank for the help guys. Razz just needed to talk to someone about it I guess.

You're job is where you will end up spending the majority of your time for the rest of your life, not enjoying your money. Therefore it is better to have a job you like that pays enough, than a job you don't like that pays more than enough.

That's basically common knowledge. Of course I assumed that had already been his first destination before asking this here, and didn't think it needed to be said.
