Well, from what I have been told it depends on the degree of how sick you are to weather or not you stay home, a lot of the time people take days of school when it is no big deal, but I guess it is for safety, just in case.

And yea, there are a lot of people like your mum.

No, it hasn't. You simply have not been exposed to other strains. I know people who have gone many years without getting the flu, but they also have had limited contact with others which explains why. It may appear that their bodies are immune at first glance, but they really are not. The only reason they have not been getting sick is because the virus has not even been introduced.

To become immune to a virus, you must first be exposed to it. A minor difference, a single mutation of a virus makes a whole new virus that your body needs to learn how to fight. If you are immune to virus A, and it mutates into virus A2, you are no longer immune to it.

Yes your body has to be exposed first so it can identify the virus and send your T cells after it, it then keeps all the information gathered about the virus to identify it again. If there is a slight mutation of the virus, it cant be identified and the whole process starts again.
