No, you don't... but I think I know what happened.

You're right, the subscription probably ran out, but you don't have to pay to put a site on google. It's still in there somewhere, just shoved to the back. I watched a show on the Discovery Channel once, about how Google manages to operate without advertisements, and it's by giving the people that pay for subscriptions the first results.

Yeah...
I think I came upon a better business model for them, though. They have companies pay to be listed on Google Maps or Google Earth, and they build search engines for third parties.

they actually don't have subscriptions. You add a tiny file to your server that tells the googlebot its allowed to cache your page.

and no they don't even have subscriptions for 'better' result placement. Google makes money through adsense nearly exclusively.
