It's range is slightly more than half that of the M16, and it's not very accurate.

It's the perfect gun for guerilla warfare, but not as good for a formal military.
Perfect example being Afganistan in the 80's when the Soviets invaded.

The resisting tribes and the Russians both had the same gun, but the tribes were able to use it to greater effect, which is why the Russians decided to use helocopter raids instead.
And then we gave the guerrillas heat-seeking missiles. So much for that warm-water port. You guys know why Russia invaded Afghanistan, right?

Oil?
Guess again. The Russians had plenty of Oil, and Afghanistan has little to none.

Now look at a map of Russia. What don't you see? That's right, a warm-water port. Well, sure, there's one in the Black Sea, but NATO controlled the sole exit to the Black Sea... and the exit to that exit. Invading Afghanistan was a stepping stone to invading Pakistan, and then setting up a port that would be in service year-round.

Ah yes, of course.

OK, people, I just made an amazing discovery.

Kalashnikov, the designer of the AK-47, is STILL alive, and is 89 years old. I HAVE to go meet this guy.

of course the only notable weapons in use anymore are the AK-47 AK-74 and the Draganov sniper rifle.

For Sniper rifles i would say the Mosin Nagant, It killed more germans in the war than any other sniperifle thats gotta be worth something.

For a pistol i would say Colt .45

I actually knew that already.

Anyway, the M1's locking mechanism, is what inspired(and by inspired, I mean reverse-engineered) the locking mechanism for the AK-47.

In my novel(or at least its universe, as it may not become a novel for some time) the primary assault rifles used by mercenaries, as well as some armies, is the Mx10.
It's one of my own creation, but it borrows several concepts from modern assault rifles.

It's more durable than the AK-47, has longer range than an M16, has a rear-loading clip(like the AUG or FAMAS), uses 30-06 rifle rounds(the same used by most rifles during WWII), and has many different hard points for which to attach things like grenade launchers, laser designators, and even miniature flamethrowers.

The AK-47 for the assault rifle.

I choose this as a weapon thats good all around. Easy to mas produce, extremely durable, can go through hell and back. Its reliability is amazing, while it lacks in accuracy, it overcomes with all the rest.

If we are going for special catagories, I will pick a diff. gun.

i choose the lancer.
a gun that is full auto, accurate, has a pretty high RoF, a chainsaw, and still light enough to carry around on a battle field
