I felt like the last 4 or so levels were easier than a lot of the other ones.

Fuck that not fun self-masochist bullshit.

All that game is (And Gaiden) is remembering the level layout and all the hazards in the level by blind repetition where you play the same section over and over again. It requires virtually no skill, just enormous patience for cheap deaths. There's a difference between dying because you made a mistake and the game punishes you for it, and dying over and over again because you get hit by something you were even made aware of.

I would say that these are both worse than IWBTG.

Just using my pool of friends from school as a testing base... all have beat IWBTG, none have beat either of those games (I am the only one who can beat kid chameleon... this comes from over a decade and a half of on/off playing)

I would contest that there are many great platformers who do not require players to use memorization and trial-and-error to succeed. To be great at any game, knowledge of the level is a huge benefit, but it isn't necessary.

Although, I'm also not as opposed to the games as Vigil.

I was probably exaggerating a tad.

Yes, most games, new and old do require a level of memorisation, from boss patterns to map memory for weapon spawns, to build timings in starcraft, to combos in a fighting game, I'm not saying that's a problem.

My Problem with IWTBTG is that all it fundamentally requires is that memorisation with a bit of platforming skill. The main reason you get good at that game is by knowing exactly what will happen in each section by playing through them and dying over an over and over again until you eventually get it right.

Sure it's not the only game to do this, Portal has a element of trial and error, which can easily cause you die, especially in Portal 2's Co-op for comedic effect. But in those games it's usually down to human error by getting the incorrect timing of not coming up with the correct solution.

IWTBTG kills you so cheaply in ways that no one who hasn't played through the stages or have seen them in some form could possibly expect coming. In most games when you die, you usually learn something, like you were careless, you missed some vital mechanic or your timing was off. In this game it just kills you and you learn nothing, but there was a fish or spike trap there, something you forget 20 deaths later.

Lets look at Super Meat Boy or Spolsion man, both super hard Platformers which you die a lot in. In Super Meat boy the controls are so good that a lot of the deaths are due to a mistake on your end, not the game fucking you over. Spolsion man requires accurate timing of when you use your ability and a mistake end with you dying, again examples of human error by not grasping the timing or game mechanics.

IWBTG seems to me just troll the player, but that's just my opinion of it given all I've seen of it.
