Rome 2: Total War
Preview of an invasion.
Short interview.
So yeah... It's been a long time coming. I'm glad they've moved away from the eighteenth century and back into more melee focused Total War.

Some screenshots.
I think the game is looking too bland at the moment, with brown and bloom being used extensively.

I think it looks kinda nice actually. Reminds me of 300, and it makes the battle look more gruesome.

The only place they've shown so far is Carthage, so it might not all be brown.

How exactly does a brown filter make it look more gruesome? 300's gore would have looked the same gruesome wise without a brown filter.

I was talking about the darkness, not really the brown filter.. and it just does. It looks grimy and dirty and reminds me of what a war would be like.

Trailer out.
They call it gameplay footage, but its just showing off graphics in a close up fly through of part of a battle.

Re: Rome 2: Total War
That looks great. I would love to see a non scripted battle. Hopefully this epic scale is consistent and there are a variety of city types. Sieges have indisputably been Total War's weakness in the past.
What sort of changes have they announced for campaign? I remember hearing mention of a legion based system, but that's about it.

The game is total garbage at the moment until CA fixes the mountain of problems that are present with almost everything in the game.

Re: Rome 2: Total War
I've heard the same, which is unfortunate considering how hyped it was and all.
As always with these things, the demos were fucking spectacular but the end product turns to crap (read: Halo Wars, Spore)

Re: Rome 2: Total War
I've heard mostly good things about Rome 2. I've heard the bugs are bad, but most of the people I talk to were relatively pleased with the game, all in all. Hardly sounds like it would be the colossal failure that was Halo Wars. I mean, we all knew Halo Wars was shit at least a year before release. This site was born out of our knowledge that Halo Wars was going to be shit. Spore, on the other hand, was a disappointment on a scale that is hardly comparable. Spore looked like it would be the single most amazing game in existence, and turned out to be an incredibly terrible game with few if any redeeming qualities (mainly the cell stage was fun, and if you didn't mind your allies all falling apart and declaring war on you in your absence, exploring space was ok).

Sounds a lot like Aliens Colonial Marines to me.....Nocbl2 wrote:I've heard the same, which is unfortunate considering how hyped it was and all.

Re: Rome 2: Total War
TBH, Diablo 3 wasn't THAT bad. It got kinda boring near the end and the loot system was meh, but it wasn't horrible. Just unexpected.

Re: Rome 2: Total War
I think it's hardly fair to compare Rome 2 to Colonial Marine.
Colonial Marine was a game that blatantly and intentionally lied with its demo and videos, diverting who knows how much of the intended funding to other projects *coughcoughborderlandscough* and was just, in every conceivable definition of the term, a shitty game. The graphics were terrible, the ambient music was terrible, the audio assets were terrible, the voice acting was terrible, the level design was terrible, the AI was terrible, the mechanics were terrible, the user interface was terrible. It was just a really, truly awful game with no redeeming qualities to be seen. Frankly, that e3 demo probably had more developer hours in it than the actual game.
Rome 2, on the other hand, sounds like it may have suffered from a few unsound design choices during development, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that some of them were coming from Sega in an attempt to imitate what's popular right now, but ultimately, it sounds like an alright game. From what I can tell, the most common complaints are that the faction AI is terrible and that there was greater emphasis in battle on abilities and micromanagement rather than strategy and macromanagement, the latter being where the Total War series normally shines. The former is something that can be easily fixed. They clearly have more aggressive AI coding from past games that they can rework to fit this game. The latter is something that may take some time, however.
That said, even with Rome 2's faults, I can't dislike the game after Creative did this.

Re: Rome 2: Total War
As long as they maintain their promise to patch it weekly ill be fine with it. The beta patch right now has improved quality and performance by a small yet noticeable amount at the moment, so they ARE on the right track. Im still a little irked that I have to pay 8$ to play as Sparta though....

This is the first time that anybody has ever broken down a war from antiquity, and I found it interesting.
