Re: Halo 4
I watched IGNs review, and if nothing else, they did a GREAT job of making sure you felt the reviewer loved Halo for all the right reasons.

Re: Halo 4
IGN seems to love it, but Escapist doesn't think it's particularly noteable. They both made a lot of good points, though, so I'm left with the feeling that even though it's not the best thing since sliced bread, it's still pretty good and worth a buy.
Re: Halo 4
But IGN did kind of shock me with that intro...
Isn't it a scarier possibility that it's the best Halo ever?!!?!?

It's possible that Halo 4, as a game, is better than its predecessors.KristallNacht wrote:But IGN did kind of shock me with that intro...

But given the fact that crap like this was on the drawing board, I doubt that it's going to be the best Halo game.

Lord Pheonix wrote: I do not envy “343 Studios,” what Microsoft calls its Halo Manufacturing Center. I think of myself as being reasonably capable; I can turn a blank page or similarly ornamented text field into something a person might want to read. But I would never - never - take a job at 343 Studios. There’s tempting fate, and then there’s telling fate to go fuck itself, and taking up that mantle bears those fate-fucking connotations.
They’re literally making it inside the building Bungie vacated to go be Bungie somewhere else, in a tomb, trying to create light. Bungie left a lot on the table, as we have repeatedly said: they have a peculiar talent for making great stories they can’t subsequently tell in game form. Even so. Picking up four games in, I don’t know how you do that. I wouldn’t be able to move. I would sit perfectly still until I died in my chair.
-Tycho from Penny Arcade's opinion on the matter
Tycho wrote:I told you that I would never take a job at 343 Industries, because their task was impossible; it’s all the more startling, then, that they managed to accomplish it.
It’s the best Halo campaign of the series, I don’t think there’s really going to be much of a debate there. Because the human brain is a Goddamned, stupid anachronism and barely up the fucking task, if Halo 4 had simply been as good as the previous games it would have been a failure. It is, in actual fact, a game that will make you give a shit about Halo. I had more narrative buy-in after the first ten minutes than any other game in the series managed to generate by the end.
When Bungie checked one of these things in, their games were “Halo” virtually by definition. That wasn’t the case for this team. They had to earn it. And by Lord Pheonix, they did.

Tell me, why the Hell do we treat Penny Arcade as a reliable barometer of how good games are? They're just like every other reviewer. They're not fans of a series. They're not invested in a given story.Tylertlat wrote:Lord Pheonix wrote: Blahblahblahblah

And they haven't been funny in years.
I'll believe them if they say it's fun to play, but I'll need to see for myself if the game is truly a good Halo game.

Re: Halo 4
its not about that. It's the fact he saw the chances of it being good as entirely impossible but ended up believing it to be the best. It's the heavy contrast in view that's important there.

Re: Halo 4
Yah, the general consensus for Halo 4 was that it would probably not be a great game, even among casual fans of the franchise. Everyone just expected it to be good - or at least good enough to justify a cash grab - but still a big step down from previous editions. In stark contrast to some other recent AAA titles, nobody was especially excited for this game.
Of course reviewers are going to give a Halo game two thumbs up, but that's not the surprising part. What's noteworthy is that the population who had low expectations came out with such drastically opposite opinions after playing it. It doesn't take much to satisfy a fanboy, but it's not just the excited fanboys who are praising this game.
The Escapist's review still has me worried, though, and we all know Yatzee will get his turn with it before the month is over. I'm not going to let the good reviews hype me up, but I will definitely try to get a copy of Halo 4 before the end of the year.

When asked about this, they explained that there wasn't enough room for the classic armors. I kid you not.Vigil wrote:No Mark V helmet, No sale.

Yet, they still have space for a lot of Reach Helmets? And Dead Space and Bioshock helmets?
What?

Re: Halo 4
I'm not sure how to feel about some of those.
I'm okay with a few (read 2 or 3) off the wall helmets, but like half of them are just ridiculous.

Meh. The idea behind the Spartan program is that it's all prototype barely-been-tested tech, so I don't mind it looking strange.... as long as it doesn't have a skull carved into it. That was a bit out there.
Re: Halo 4
I guess MJOLNIR is cheap as dirt, because they're able to waste money on so many identical and/or useless variants. We got two helmets with headphones for the dudebros, and we got a helmet specifically for underwater engagements.
Because why the Hell not?

Re: Halo 4
The helmets are crap. And honestly, isn't MJOLNIR supposed to be the "solution to everything" armor? If so, why the hell do you have SO MANY Lord Pheonix DAMNED VARIATIONS? It's not like Noble or the 40-ish S-II's are going to use all of those! And don't tell me "it was for the S-IVs!" Bullshit, you had all of those in Reach.

Re: Halo 4
Yeah, it was bad enough in Reach. I can understand why some specialized helmets (EVA, GUNGNIR, maybe Scout) would be developed, but an entire helmet for forward artillery observers? Give me a break.Nocbl2 wrote:The helmets are crap. And honestly, isn't MJOLNIR supposed to be the "solution to everything" armor? And then there's "Operator", made and named solely for the tacticool mall ninjas in the audience.
Anyhow, go here for the 'backstory' behind the armor permutations. Good news: FOTUS ain't canon.
Bad news: they got a couple of anime fanboys on their art team.
And here to see the new Covenant dropship (and the first known post-War vehicle for them).
