Re: This is why the EFF needs alot more support.
almost all phones on the market do this, one reason is so that phone companies know where their phones are being used so they can provide service optimally, and two so that if you call 911 the cops will be able to find you if you dont know where you are
you cant connect to a phone line or to the internet without your location being logged somewhere... if you dont want people to know where you are, turn off your phone

Sometimes you have to take the battery out as well.

This was a secret? I've known about this for a long time now... and I don't even own an iPhone! How the frick do people think the GPS on that thing works, anyway?
The girl who was talking about how "scandalous" it is was, imo, a retard. It's not scandalous at all. In fact, I'm sure Apple has it listed somewhere buried in their Terms of Service.

Had no idea the bundle was back on...
And yes most phones can track where you are but they should not be recording the information.

All electronic equipment does. Hell the things we're typing on right now are well known to do it. As phones became more advanced it was a logic step to increase what they monitor on them.

the iphone stores that info though, which is something no other mobile device does.
and as far as everything tracking your location, the internet simply logs IPs, which give a loose area unless combined with court order to your ISP.

Absolutely everything you do is logged on all computers, not just the iPhone. The iPhone is certainly not the first; it was just the first with enough "apps" for the feature to become well known. Whether or not it is reported to Apple was not expressed in that article. Even if Apple did receive the information, though, it would almost definitely be covered in the Terms of Service. If it's not illegal, Apple is free to track whatever the hell they want. Why should people care, though? The Pariah wrote:Had no idea the bundle was back on...

it is actually illegal though (if not in the terms of service, of which none are signed for use of the phone) as a breach of personal security (assuming its leaked to apple) and there is zero reason for the iphone to keep track of that information as it stands. There are apps that specifically do that, but those have to be specifically downloaded and opted into.

It's in the Apple terms o' service, and honestly, without it you would not be able to call 911 with much success.

Apple actually can't make a terms of service for use of their device. As the Iphone provides no service. the carrier does.
and passive tracking isn't the issue here nocbl, its the fact the information is stored.

No shit the information is stored.
Let's say the cops are trying to catch a criminal, who is using an Iphone to call his buddy. The cops can see where he's been to see if they have the right guy, and also to chase him and catch him.

Why do you think phone companies for years have been keeping records of all the calls made on their devices? It's great in the situation Noc described and makes sure they aren't being used in any illegal activity.

To my knowledge, GPS service (and, in turn, tracking) doesn't work without accepting at least one terms of service.KristallNacht wrote:Apple actually can't make a terms of service for use of their device. As the Iphone provides no service. the carrier does.

It's probably in the manual that no one reads.

Re: This is why the EFF needs alot more support.
Still, it's not unique... it's not new... and it's hardly 'wrong'
Re: This is why the EFF needs alot more support.
its a start civ.
just like ending net neutrality. just because its not 'wrong' now, doesn't mean it won't become 'wrong' soon if they get away with it.
