Jorge, Noble 5.

--[Halsey]---
It's good to see him home again.

--[Probably Halsey, sounds like her]--
But the fall of Reach will weigh heavily upon him, and this mission will test every last ounce of his strength.
Cortana and Halsey are narrating, but it doesn't sound like it's from the game. She's referencing events that haven't happened yet. At this time they thought that Noble Team was investigating a simple strike force, so there's no way they could even foresee the battle itself much less the outcome.

It's just Vi-Doc narration, not in-game material. Bungie's version of a fancy introduction.

You. Liked. Eragon.

I have only one epithet for you: Untermensch.
Go down to the library and pick up something by Terry Goodkind, or maybe Robert Jordan. That's about your speed. Hell, don't forget to pick up David Eddings while you're at it! Enjoy the entire Hall of Fantasy Hacks.

Ladies and Gentlemen, a hearty welcome to Mr. Goodkind! Having struggled up the ranks without learning a wit about characterization, pacing, or consistency, suffering from such debilitating handicaps like Dyslexia and a slavish devotion to Ayn Rand, he truly is a success! Give him a hand, folks!

And the Ghost of Jordan! Lacking in imagination though he is, he also holds us in awe for his ability to let his plots run wild, with no intent whatsoever of wrapping them up before his death... or, indeed, ever.

Adding color, we have David Eddings! As rare as a chivalrous thief, we have a completely honest hack gracing us with his presence today. Unlike the rest of us, he openly admits to writing from formula, with no consideration for how generic and wall-bangerish the final product may be! An honor indeed, that a special circle of Hell has been reserved for him, that Tolkein himself might have the pleasure of ripping his kidneys out.

And introducing a newcomer to the mix! A curious specimen indeed, as it appears to be a human born entirely devoid of creativity or innovation. He merely seems to be capable of imitation, hence his introductory novel being a LotR/Star Wars/Dragons of Pern crossover fanfic. The Gods must have pity upon him, else they would not have birthed him to a pair of con artists masquerading as genuine publishers, who would surely print up as many copies of their son's... abomination... as he pleases.

Please welcome Stephan Paoulini!

The gang's all here, folks. Now lock the doors, turn up the showers and fire the ovens. Let's return the fantasy genre to real authors.

Vtrooper wrote:some one remind me, in chapter 11 of FoR, they mention a second generation of Spartan-II, what if Halsey thinks Noble is this second generation of Spartans? did we think of that possibility
The problem, although I'm loathe to admit that I'm beginning to LIKE that explanation, is that it's just about the ONLY mention of Second-Generation Spartan IIs.
As for Mendez's involvement, it appears that there was a nine-year gap between the end of the Spartan II training and the kidnapping of Kurt. As the initial Spartan II class lasted 8 years in training, it's doable. Barely.

I'm not sure if Halsey would've been involved. Spartan II training is a path that had already been forged, so she may have sought new horizons. Like AI integration with MJOLNIR, or perhaps the study of recovered Covenant Technology.

Oh, and FoR mentions, when the Spartans got their armor, that there were forty plexiglass mannequins displaying the armor. Which leads me to believe that the entire MJOLNIR project cost as much as a battle fleet, not each individual armor. Clearly, there were extras.

Vtrooper wrote:as for the Saber with Shields, its EXPERIMENTAL, and suposedly Noble Six was part of that program, Experimental Part, as well as the time period, makes me think it was ment to be a Next Generation Fighter for the UNSCDF with reverse engineered Covenant Tech
I have to say this: The UNSC clearly had shield tech that was in some form of development by 2552. Canonically, the bubble shield in Halo 3 was developed by ONI (Hey, the Brutes were using human tech already. Is it such a surprise?) and we can't forget MJOLNIR Mk V and Mk VI. I'd say that a crash program to apply shield tech to fighters isn't all that far out there.

Delete that last one from the list, and I may respect you yet.

I am disappointed by the Eragon love in this thread.

Eragon is one of the worst main characters I have ever come across. I always wanted him to die or something nearly the entire time. I only read the first two (first one is tolerable), but I can only assume the second two are less-than-amazing as well.

Characters were bad (except eragon's cousin was kinda cool). Eragon is self-centered, mentally retarded (I assume), whiney, impatient, overpowered, immature, and obsessed with some elf girl princess who doesn't even like him and is way out of his league.
Speaking of elves, those were some god-awful elves. This guy took "elves are hippies in the trees" to a degree I've never seen before. He even made the "noble wise race" a bunch of intolerance athiests and set up a strawman arguement through the dwarven religion. That annoyed me.

Story was okay because it was a dude doing a quest and getting sidetracked and being a retard a lot and getting his teacher killed but w/e that's how he was.
EXCEPT HE SPENDS CHAPTER AFTER CHAPTER TRAINING WITH THE ELVES.
NOTHING HAPPENS.
AT ALL.
(except for his magical healing to fix all the problems he's ever had, because that's not convenient at all. so much for having a crippled hero...)

The Setting amused me because it was so unimaginative and overdone before.

What the book did right: Eragon's cousin was kinda cool.
What it fails horribly at: Romance side-stories.

also, lol Urgals

I don't see any issues with the shields on the fighter... they did have working energy shielding by 2552... it would be naive to think that the MJOLNIR armor was the ONLY thing that shields would be put on... especially since a suit of armor would be a shit ton more difficult to integrate a shielding system into than something like a fighter.

it would probably have been in the prototype stage... but single ship shielding is easier to do than personal energy shields... the biggest limitation they had with MJOLNIR was the power supply... which wouldn't be a problem in a spacecraft with a reactor powering it

I am, however not convinced by the noble team being thought of as the next class of spartan II's.... if no other explanation comes up then I will reluctantly accept that.... but it isn't quite a good enough explanation for me to write off Halsy's knowledge

The question is, then, why don't any single ships in the Halo games have shields. You'd think the Pillar of Autumn, equiped for an extremely important special ops mission, would have the latest tech.

well if it was on reach it was probably still in development

getting the shields to work =/= having a combat ready spacecraft

and I don't like the rectons either... and I hate how the halo universe pulls "prototypes" out of its ass at every turn to explain anything new... instead of coming up with a real explanation... but this is the explanation we are going to get...
