Killing Floor Empty Killing Floor

Did you guys like Nazi Zombies? Hoard? Firefight? How about that stupid survival game on L4D where you can't last longer than a minute or two? Good. This is kinda like that... but much scarier and better built. Killing Floor is a game about surviving - hence the survival games I mentioned before - in a zombie-infested world of... well... zombies. Sorta. Here's the official 'story', though it doesn't really matter much in-game.

It’s a co-op survival horror game. Up to 6 players in online co-op mode, or just you, on your own, playing the Solo mode. The aim – cleanse each area of zombies, in waves, until you get to the last one. The Big One. The Patriarch. Then exterminate him, too. Actually, they aren’t “zombies”. They are the left-over “specimens” from a cheap and dirty government program to clone soldier-monsters. The basic ones will just munch on your arm and try to disembowel you. The bigger ones were the first ones they tried arming. Nothing much. Just a chainsaw or a blade for starters. They had just got on to the chain gun and rockets when the government tried to secretly shut down their secret program.

But, in the typical way these things go, the program didn’t want to be shut down. The specimens got loose. No-one was left alive to turn off the specimen-cloning equipment. And now they are running amok. Well, some of them are running amok. Others are shambling amok or even jumping amok, but you get the idea.

The police were sent in, but that wasn’t even a challenge for the specimens. The first army units hadn’t been warned what to expect. The screams of “its got a bloody chainsaw!” over the radios probably didn’t do much for morale, as whole units were chewed up. Quite literally, in some cases, of course.

And now, there is just you. And a few friends. The few survivors from the first police and army units thrown in. Of course, you can’t tell anyone anything, because that would be a breach of the Official Secrets Act 1911, 1920, 1989. And that would be a disciplinary offense. So just get in there and do your bit for Queen and Country…

Zombies. Lots of them. Big ones, little ones. Armed and Dangerous. JUST MAKE THEM ALL GO AWAY!

Basically, you are dropped off in a map, sometimes huge and sometimes small... dark, light, open hillsides, closed halls and rooms, whatever. Because people can make their own maps, there's a lot of stuff to choose from. Your goal is to survive for all the waves of zombies, cleansing the area. This is no pushover like Hoard was, though. It's simple enough on Beginner and Easy, but you'll be wetting yourself if you attempt anything much harder. Even with six people at a time, you'll have trouble... and the spooky lighting and bloody screams don't really help you stay calm.

Other than surviving zombies, there are a few more features to the game. You get money (in pounds) for killing zombies, kinda like in Nazi Zombies, but there aren't just weapons that you can pick up off of the walls. At the end of each round a trade shop opens up somewhere in the map, so if you want something more than a pistol, you'd better get there fast. The weapons you purchase at the trade shop will likely correspond with your class (marksman, demolition, whatever). Classes improve certain weapons and can even make them cheaper, but leveling them up to make them even more effective is no walk in the park. For example, a friend of mine is working on his level 5 marksman class, for which he has to get 85,000 headshots. For this reason, each class can only go up to 6 levels.

I think it's a fun, cheap game. Yah... for more info, go here.
