nVidia or ATI?
Re: Computer Upgrade Time, Part II
If budget is not an issue, go nVidia. ATI are loud, power consuming and fucking hot (temperature, hurr), but they do perform.
It's really a matter of budget with something like this. If you can get the top of the line nVidia card that may perform similar to one of the top of the line ATIs, you may as well go nVidia because they're actually more reliable cards, and not big bulky overheating cards like ATI.

Re: Computer Upgrade Time, Part II
While I claimed budget wasn't an issue before, I would like to try and keep the price below a few hundred dollars. Black Friday may offer ridiculously low prices, but I have a lot of upgrades to make and not so much monies (especially since that good for nothing boss of mine STILL hasn't paid me...when I work again this Friday, it will have been the second pay period since I started...).

One of the 200 series will do fine. The 295 might still too expensive. I dont know about prices in America, are they reasonable

Go for a 5870 if you can find one. It's better than the 285, and pretty close to the same price.

Re: Computer Upgrade Time, Part II
I've got three people weighing in, all spouting numbers that I'm not particularly familiar with (but I think all three are saying nVidia), and yet there's only one vote, and its for ATI. Quite hilarious.
Re: Computer Upgrade Time, Part II
Sorry, the 285 is almost the top of the line nvidia graphics card (of their newest generation), while the 5870 is ATIs newest graphics card, which performs better than the 285, and is a bit worse than the 295 in some areas (difference is very little). I'll find some benchmarks when I get home from school. Also, I'm saying ATI.

Nvidias are more expensive but are 10x more reliable and are more powerful
just be careful... as they suck a little more energy than ATI GFx cards

Some benchmarks showing that the 5870 beats the 285.

Some benchmarks of the 5870 vs the 295 (remember that the 5870 was just released, while the 295 has had almost a year to work on drivers, so the 5870 is only gonna get faster than the 295 as time progresses). Also, the 5870 supports Dx11.

Re: Computer Upgrade Time, Part II
theres still a years difference there... drivers have nothing to do with it when technology increaces as fast as it does...
when ATI and Nvidia release cards at the same time Nvidias are faster and more reliable, just a bit more expensive
ATM however... you can pick up an Nvidia GTX 260 or 280 pretty cheap... and it will still eat any game you want to play
