Great game. Does anybody own it? Want to play it?

I loved it, I lost it. Trying to buy it on Steam now.

FreeLancer is an open world RPG set in space. It must have come out in about 2001 so although the graphics are pretty poor, it's only 900mb and took me 20 mins to download. You can also go online (with no copy protection) to the exact same world just with other plays flying about an no story missions.

The universe is set in the Sierra system. Different countries have colonised their own set of space. Liberty (US), Briattanica(Uk), Hispania(Spain), and the German one which name escapes me. A few other nations take part too. This space is linked by Jump Gates very similar to those in Mass Effect.

Gameplay involves Dogfight style space battles. In the story mode this can include everything from Space Stations, giant battleships like the Pillar of Autumn, or even prison transport ships to be one your side. Epic is the word to describe some of the battles you get into. It was also the first game to introduce me to the concept of a Dyson Sphere.

Out of story, you'll largely be fighting against similar fighter ships to your own. However, there are about 25 different factions each with their own opinion of you. And, if you like (which I do), you can hire out a freighter(big guns, big cargo low manoeuvrability), jack a trade lane, and rob blind whatever poor sucker happens to be going though. You can also attack storage caches for big loot.

It also has its own economy, making shuttling rare commodities a very valuable business, if a little slow.

It may be the only open world rpg space sim I've played, but literally the only improvement I could think to make (graphics none withstanding) would be to add the story modes diversity of ships to side missions and multiplayer (which I'm sure a modder has been kind enough to do by now) and let you walk around on planets.

As it is, you can dock with planets, and it uses cutscenes to show yo walk around while you use menus to navigate.

So yeah. Freelancer is a great game even for people with low end computers. I'm running it on my laptop on highest! If anyone wants to check it out, send us a PM or just ask about it here.

Full game is fairly hard to find due to age (I only looked on steam and then pirated) but it'll be about $10 max I think.

There is a trial. I'll fetch it now.

Enjoy

Bare in mind that this only displays the single player open world element in about 1/30th of the game.
