No different than Xfire and Gamespy...
Stop making me angry. It's not fun for me.
The immediate importance of Steam comes from its download services. While most of you may not like downloading your (legal) games, Steam accounts for a large percentage of PC game sales.
What makes Steam important in the long run is the community. PC gaming has never had the sort of, togetherness that has been available on consoles in the past couple generations. Steam gives PC gaming a community. Unlike Xfire, which is mainly just an IM service, you meet new people on Steam.
Steam is better than Gamespy, because gamespy is awful. Gamespy is the excuse developers used to use for actually putting effort into their online games.
The only services around that actually compete with steam, and share the same goal, are windows live and Impulse. Impulse is a newish system by stardock, which is pretty much just their take on Steam. Unfortunately for Stardock, it's not going to work. Steam has the advantage of being run by Valve, and thus claiming exclusive rights to Valve games. Valve is also very close partners with EA who, while they may be willing to share some content with microsoft, will likely not run off with stardock.
Games for Windows live is terrible. You can't even run the program unless you're in game. With steam, you can look at your friends list, see who's playing what, and jump into a game from their. A friend might start up a game, and you can just click on the message that pops up at the bottom of your screen, and jump right into their server.
With windows live, you can's see your friends list until you have started up a GFWL game. Even then, the interface is a console Port. You can't use your mouse when you bring up the guide. You have to use arrow keys. There is no chat. You have to send messages like you would with Xboxlive. It feels restrictive, and it sucks. The only thing that windows live has is good dedicated servers.
All around, PC gaming really just needs connectivity. E3 is coming around again. It starts June 4th. Reggie Fils-aime will be speaking for Nintendo. Maybe Shane Kim will speak for Microsoft, and Kaz Hirai will probably represent Sony.
Who will speak for PC gaming? Microsoft seems to have given up on that front. There is no "PC gaming" press conference like there is a conference for the Xbox 360 or Sony. I wish there could be. Maybe in the future.... a perfect future... Valve could represent PC gaming.

Re: Steam
Maybe you should propose this idea to Valve. You mentioned earlier that you had talked to the...guy in charge of it (damn short term memory) a few days ago.

Re: Steam
Eh, I have steam but it has never come in handy other than communicating with Omega so that we could play a single game of RA3.
Maybe other people buy games online and other people have more friends that actually play games on the computer... but I don't.
Not trying to make you mad, Recon... I just don't have that much of a use for it.

lol, you fool. Lets see...
Counter-Strike Source: 4.5 GB
Empire:Total War: 15 GB
Left 4 Dead: 5 GB
Deadspace: 12 GB
GTA IV: 16 GB
Half Life 2: 3.5 GB
Half-Life 2 Ep. 1: 4.5 GB
Half life 2 Ep. 2: 8.5 GB
Half-life source: 3.5 GB
Mirror's Edge: 7
They do take up quite a bit of space, but Hard Drives are big these days, and you can always uninstall old stuff and download again later.

Well that depends if the game itself requires disk check. Empire, for instance, does not.
But when I want to play FarCry 2 (never) I have to put in a disc.
