The Resistance Chapter 1

A foul stench entered Rilly’s nose as his eyes twitched open and he became aware that he was lying on the ground with his face pressed against the earth. Rather stiffly he stood up and brushed himself down and looked around. He was in the middle of an enormous field he could see nothing but grassland in any direction, apart from a small valley far in the distance to his right.
What was he doing here?
He tried to remember how he had got there and why he had been lying on the ground…But nothing, all he could remember was that he was aboard the Odyle and was running towards the escape pods, then here. Here in the middle of some grass field. Then it came to him, the sergeant, Ren, where are they? He was with them aboard the Odyle, Where are they now?
He knew he had to find them, But where to start? They must be somewhere near, but, the land around him was flat and open so if they were he would be able to see them. The only place that he couldn’t see was behind that valley. Armed with his pistol he set out to find them.

It felt like hours, staggering across the grassland to the valley in the blazing sun, when really it was just 14 minutes. The valley entrance was in utter darkness, The sun being blocked by the trees, although this made it cooler in the valley there were also other dangers. Many predators lurk in dark places like this, but Rilly being Rilly, he was not bothered about such predators. He was the fearless type, the dare devil, the kind of person who would do anything for anything. He inspired courage into his companions, but still even with this ability he has not yet once been promoted from the rank private Rilly. Although he hated this many would say he had the honour of being in Recon 2, the eyes of the UNSC, the ones thinking of the strategy to win, which they always did. Picking off enemy’s from the back lines. But that all changed after the battle on the Odyle, many of his team mates died that day whilst he stood and watched dazzled by the new foe, not knowing what to do. There is no honour in watching people die.

Rilly carried on walking through the valley, when he got a whiff of a very foul smell, like a rotting corpse and that is exactly what it was. The body of a small…..thing really those were the only words that could describe it was lurking in a ditch to the left of his path, hid underneath the treeline. It had a small triangular blue body with orange trimmed armour, with a small head the size of a small skills football. A small metal curved triangle coming out of its back, it looked a bit like a gas tank, blue blood oozing from its body made a pool on the black dark valley floor. Muttering from high pitched voices came from behind him, he swiftly turned at pulled his pistol from its holster, ready to fire. Then it stopped, he paused examining the surroundings, but there was nothing there. Confused, Rilly stood there puzzled, thinking to him self what it was. Suddenly again, rustling from behind him, but this time the foe showed his face. Charging straight at him drawing 2 pulsing blue objects, for a few moments he paused then instinct told him to dive out of the way. He threw himself away from the creature just in time behind him he could hear 2 explosions, straight after one another. Rilly counted to 10 before getting up, but unfortunately to his astonishment he was encircled by more than 10 other creatures different from the others. These were blue; they looked like humans in blue armour, but they didn’t talk like humans, and they didn’t look friendly either.

Chapter 2

Rilly, shut his eyes as hard as he could, took a deep breath and began saying goodbye to all the people who had meant something to him, his mother, wife, father and all the other people among his family. Lastly, he remembered all the pleasures and joys he had known, the satisfaction of a good meal, the thrill of running down a hill as a child, the wind is his face. The comfort of a soft bed at the end of the day, even the flow of breath in and out his body. He bid them all farewell. Then he took another deep breath, ready to endure his death but to his surprise it had been some few minutes and he wasn’t dead. He slowly opened his eyes not knowing what to expect once they were open. But he couldn’t do it, so he decided after 3 to open them as fast as he could. He started to count….3……2……1……He stuck by his word and his eyes flashed open.

To his amazement the creatures were just standing there, all around him, stood on there hooves as if waiting for some sort of signal to fire. Maybe they thought Rilly was casting a hex on the elites, or maybe the just toying with Rilly before he died, that was most likely. Whatever it was it didn’t matter anymore the creatures drew there weapons, Rilly could see there fingers twitching pulling on the trigger. Any second now Rilly will be dead but it seemed luck was on his side, a roaring from an engine started to come closer and closer. Suddenly the creatures’ attention changed from Rilly to the oncoming noise. Treating the noise as hostile the band of blue creatures pointed their weapon in the general direction of the noise…….Then the noise died down, a short grunt came from one of the creatures and they split up to search for the hostile noise. Rilly saw this as his chance to escape, to run from this threat, he got up ready to run but behind him one of the creatures stayed to guard Rilly. Suddenly the noise started up again and this time was coming closer and faster.

As the noise came closer he recognised its sound, “the sergeants warthog” Whispered Rilly to himself. The blue creature guarding Rilly turned and pointed his weapon at Rilly feeling threatened at the sound of his voice, Rilly put his hands up as to surrender and to show he meant no harm but the blue figure took it the wrong way and started to pull the trigger on his weapon, Rilly closed his eyes knowing his time was up, there was no-one here to save him, no other creature to stop this one, he was doomed. Then he stopped and thought to himself “Am I a complete idiot? I can’t belive what I am saying I am right, there is no other creature to stop this one”
Rilly, knew what he had to do, with all his strength Rilly pulled back his fist and then propelled it forward at the blue figure, the creature fell to the floor un-conscious. Rilly paused to look at his victim, lying there on the floor helpless. Rilly raised his leg ready to stamp on the creatures head to finish him off. Then he realised, this creature had done no harm to him, he stood and let him live when Rilly thought he was going to die, he let him live. So why should he kill him? Instantly the sound of gunfire caught his attention, Rilly ran and left his victim unconscious on the floor towards the sound of the sergeants warthog, ready to join the fight, ready to save his companions.

Chapter 3

Rilly advanced through the thick damp terrain, no idea where he was going. He just had to follow the sound of an advancing warthog in the distance. Unfortunately he was stopped in his tracks by the blue creatures that set out to find the warthog. The creatures pointed their weapons at him, Rilly turned to run but bumped into the creature he knocked out earlier. Once again encircled by the creatures Rilly realised there was no way out this time. He was doomed.
“Go on kill me then” announced Rilly.
To Rilly amazement the creatures relied in the same tongue as his own.
“That is precisely what we plan to do human”
Rilly closed he eyes and waited.

“YEEHAA” Cried Ren as he stormed past in the sergeant’s warthog, knocking down several creatures along the way.
“Quick, hop on sir!” Shouted Ren
Without further ado Rilly jumped up onto the 50 cal mounted on the back of the warthog.
“Shoot the machine” cried one of the creatures.
“Blast those silly blobs” Ordered Ren.
**CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUG**
Rilly did not let go of the trigger, firing and firing, until the gun started to click.
Ren asked Rilly why he had stopped firing.
“I am all out” Shouted Rilly “no more ammo; we got to get out of here”
Ren swerved the warthog away from the fight and started to drive away, but still under constant chase from the creatures. Rilly still on the mounted gun, carefully manoeuvred his way into the passenger seat.
“We’ve got no more ammo, what do we do?” Asked Rilly
“You still got that pistol on you?” Asked Ren
Rilly didn’t reply, But just took his pistol from its holster, stuck his arm out, aimed and fired. Ren took a tight turn to the left, which was a very bad mistake to make, one of the creatures luck was in, it fired and hit Rilly in the shoulder. Immediately, Rilly’s body went flying forward against the dash board.
“NOOOOOOOOOO” cried Ren.
Ren, seeing if Rilly was ok reached over to him with one hand and with the other trying to keep control of the warthog. He felt his pulse…..Nothing, he was dead. Not looking where he was going Ren lost control of the warthog and he drove down a ditch and crashed.

***BLACKOUT**

Chapter 4

The sun was setting on the city of Nesion, a vast sprawling battle scared city on where its inhabitants have been dead for a few weeks now. Once it had been very grand, with rows of headstones that stretched for miles in each direction, huge family vaults and elaborate marble statues. But over time since it has been under hostile control it had become sadly neglected. Now bird droppings covered its crumbling monuments and broad avenues were overgrown with trees and bushes.
