Stem Cells

Do you think the continuation of stem cell research should be allowed, and if so do you think they should mainly use embryonic stem cells or adult stem cells, Lastly do you think that somewhere in the near future they could be used to cure cancer, diabetes, and other miscellaneous diseases?

Of course it should! Stem cell research is the key to fixing everything that is wrong with our physical bodies, from what I can tell it has potential for working miracles.

I definitely support all forms of stem cell research. I'm all for Embryonic Stem Cell research as well.

And yes, I'm hopeful and quite sure that it will one day be used to cure such conditions.

Yeah, I agree with stem cell research.

I also think there's a better way of doing it than using aborted fetuses from unwanted pregnancies.
I think they should use cloning, I mean taking a cell nucleus, and inserting it into an eggcell without a nucleus, and finding a way around pregnancy.
Like putting it in a tank with adequate heating and proper fluid.

Frankly, blood stem cells, which are normally thrown away with the placenta and umbilical cord, are almost as rich and efficient as embryonic stem cells, so if people dislike embryonic stem cells, and blood stem cells are almost as effective, why not just use those instead? You get nearly the same results without the public outcry.

I don't see how birthing an embryo in a tube and then using it would be any different than birthing it in a female and then doing the same.... I'm ok with both.

Quite honestly, we've found a way to regenerate stem cells from skin cells. We should be looking into this for development, and all the controversy goes away.
We don't need to abort babies for stem cells.

Yeas, but there is only some much stem cells in skin tissue, (they have also found stem cells in a lot of the major organs), so as long as we have abortion legal we should use the fetuses for stem cells.

stem cells have been identified in many organs and tissues. there are a very small number of them in each tissue. Stem cells are thought to reside in a specific area of each tissue where they may remain quiescent for many years until they are activated by disease or tissue injury. The adult tissues reported to contain stem cells include brain, bone marrow, peripheral blood, blood vessels, skeletal muscle, skin and liver.

I've heard about that, turning organ cells back into stem cells... It's all nice. I honestly do not know enough about the topic. I don't know what the significance of human embryos is. What makes them better?

Embryonic stem cells are more versatile. Somehow, they last longer and can do more than stem cells taken from the umbilical cord.

That's just my understanding.

Erm...anyone bother to read my post about blood stem cells that are nearly as effective as embryonic stem cells that are present in high numbers in the placenta and umbilical cord? Because as it stands, we normally just throw that all in the trash after the baby is born.

I saw something in PopSci about how blood stem cells aren't as effective as embryonic stem cells, and we want to work without the limits.

I don't see how birthing an embryo in a tube and then using it would be any different than birthing it in a female and then doing the same.... I'm ok with both.

Because if the fetus is in a tube rather than a womb, you have less of a chance of a car being driven into the abortion clinic that the woman must use to get the fetus out.
I know you don't care about abortion, but you've seen how protracted and heated arguments get on the subject when dealing with evangelicals or really any kind of far right religious groups.
This makes them less likely to care, or at least takes those who don't want aborted fetuses used, out of the equation.

except that costs more. Using these already lost fetuses is cheaper and more efficient.

But as I stated before, less people are killed by Krazy Kritical Kentuckyans(not specifically Kentucky, but evangelicals and the South in general).

i think taking the blood from the umbilical chord is better than dead babies; kinda has less of a... morbid feel.
